The ecochallenge has been an engaging and fun way to learn more ways to help the environment! I'm sad it's coming to an end and hope to continue the habits and learning that I've been doing in April!

What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I enjoyed doing this activity because there are a lot of activities that I don't directly tie into usage of water, e.g. meat eating, driving a car, etc. So cool to find out how we can further reduce our water footprint, even though we have a pretty low household average overall!

What did you learn about the sacred site’s history and significance? Why are these sites important to protect, support, and understand?

I learned about Lummi Nation and their sacred tie in to the sea. They importance of salmon to the Lummi Nation really speaks to how they are fed, as well as how they preserve them.

I've stayed consistent with nighttime routine, which has really helped with my overall sleep pattern. I ensure my room is very cool and dark, and that I'm going to bed at the same time each night - even on weekends, which can be a challenge. Sleep is SO important!

Exercising each day really helps with mental clarity and physically just feeling better all around! I enjoy strength training, but also enjoy cycling so it's hard to say what my most enjoyable activity is! I am just happy I'm able to be active!

Hi Fluke Team, Thank you for an opportunity to learn new ways to support our wonderful, diverse environment and unique Pacific NW ecosystems. It's my belief that climate change and care for our surroundings is the responsibility of each individual and that collectively, our small actions will make a bigger impact. By participating in this challenge,
I learned additional methods I can take to make that impact and promote changes within my home, community, and more. (Who knew seaweed was so wonderful?!) I really appreciated the chance to grow my positive ecological impact!

I signed up for the EcoChallenge this year, for my second year, not expecting to get so invested. However, I soon realized that the points system really motivated me to learn and do more, while being honest to what I was acheiving. Because of this, I learned and did so much in April. Some highlights include:
    • Learning more about my local community center--I knew they did a lot for our neighborhood, but I had no idea HOW much until this challenge.
    • Signed up to volunteer for the community center in my specific interest/skill sets.
    • Had other friends sign up to volunteer.
    • Set up rain collection barrels in our new backyard (had the barrels already from previous home owner, but weren't properly set up)
    • Bought a sustainable water bottle for travel (I only had reusable water cups, with straws that don't do well for traveling due to leaking).
    • Increased my working out/athletic time.
    • Finally made and attended a doctor's appointment for a medical issue that has been bothering me for 2 months.
    • Updated my emergency kit at home.
    • Calculated my water footprint and carbon impact.
    • Learned how to save the bees, how to be a responsible tourist, and the 7 principles of leave no trace.
    • And more!
I had a lot of fun selecting challenges and competing in the EcoChallenge, but I'm walking away with new skills and involvement in my community, which I didn't expect. Excited for next year!

For the first part of this response, I offered yard work to our elderly neighbor. We are newer to the neighborhood, so it has been good to get to know her and the neighbors and I am happy to provide some extra help to her as she lives alone.
Secondly, I wound up signing up for regular volunteer time with my local community center. I have volunteered with them for bigger events, but due to another task as part of the EcoChallenge, I wound up learning a whole lot more about what the local community center does. There are so many ways I can offer my specific skills and talents to my community, and they can help pair me with those who need the skills. I could select skills from a list such as baking, driving seniors to medical appointments, MCing events, walking pets when community members aren't able to, playing with kids, and so many more. I had been wanting to get more involved with our community center and the EcoChallenge made me learn more about it and drove me to complete the multi-step process to sign up for regular volunteering! I'm excited!
