I used to think about my water footprint in terms of how much water I used daily and tried to reduce how much running water I actually used for daily activities. I used to work in retail and often found it hard to avoid buying unnecessary things. Now I am much more aware about the impact of consumerism and try to repurpose items I already have over buying new ones. It's not always easy but it can be done.
