Replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs definitely gave me a sense of accomplishment! It's such a simple change but knowing that they use less energy and last longer makes me feel like I'm taking a small but effective step toward reducing my environmental impact. It’s one of those “why didn’t I do this sooner?” moments, especially when I think about how much energy regular incandescent bulbs used compared to LEDs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

In my life, I think the biggest sources of carbon emissions are probably related to transportation and energy use at home. I drive a car that runs on gasoline, and although I try to keep trips minimal, the emissions from that still add up. My home also uses energy for heating and cooling, which likely comes from non-renewable sources.
To reduce my carbon footprint, I’m willing to make a few changes. First, I’m considering driving less and using public transportation more often or even biking for shorter trips. I could also look into switching to a more fuel-efficient or electric vehicle when the time comes. At home, I could start using energy-efficient appliances and be more conscious about turning things off when they’re not in use. I’m also interested in exploring renewable energy options if it’s available in my area.

    Reflect on Your Lifestyle Choices
Take stock of your daily habits and how they affect the planet. Ask yourself:
    • How much energy do I consume? Consider your electricity use, heating, and transport.
    • What do I eat? The environmental impact of your diet, such as the carbon footprint of meat vs. plant-based foods, can be huge.
    • What do I waste? Track how much you throw away—are you contributing to landfill growth? How much plastic do you use?
    • Do I use sustainable products? Look at the materials of the items you purchase and whether they are biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable.

Keeping trees hydrated during hot summer months is key to keeping them healthy and stress-free. Here’s how you can do that:
    1. Water Deeply and Infrequently
    • Watering deeply encourages deep root growth. Shallow watering causes roots to stay near the surface, making them more vulnerable to heat.
    • Aim to water 1–2 times per week, depending on the tree type, age, and climate.
    • Use a slow trickle from a hose or a soaker hose around the tree's drip line (where the branches end).
    2. Water at the Right Time
    • Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and help water soak into the soil.
    3. Mulch Generously
    • Apply 2–4 inches of organic mulch (like wood chips or bark) around the base of the tree, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk.
    • Mulch retains moisture, keeps roots cooler, and suppresses weeds.
    4. Protect Young or New Trees
    • Young trees (under 3 years old) need more frequent watering as their roots are still establishing.
    • Consider using tree watering bags for slow, even water delivery.
    5. Check Soil Moisture
    • Stick your finger or a screwdriver into the soil about 6 inches deep. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
    • Moist (but not soggy) soil is the goal.

Reducing vehicle idling is a great way to save fuel, reduce emissions, and protect your engine. Here are some practical tips:

    1. Turn off your engine: If you're stopped for more than 10 seconds (except in traffic), it's more efficient to turn off your engine and restart it when you're ready to move
    2. Warm up by driving: Modern vehicles don't need to idle to warm up. Driving gently will warm up the engine and cabin faster
    3. Avoid drive-throughs: If the line is long, consider parking and going inside instead of idling in the drive-through
    4. Use hybrid vehicles: Hybrids automatically shut off the engine when not moving, reducing idling time
    5. Follow local regulations: Some areas have laws against unnecessary idling, so be aware of local rules to avoid fines
