Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Sustainable Innovation
Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs
Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 20 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Vehicle Idling
Idling cars wastes fuel, contributes to climate change, and pollutes the air in our communities. I will turn off my engine when waiting in my car to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.
Community and Connection
Join your local Green Team or participate in an Earth Month activity organized by them
Get involved! Join your local Green Team to connect and work on local sustainability initiatives. Or, participate in one of the many Earth Month activities they've organized.

Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 1 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Wildlife
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day.
Community and Connection
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community and Connection
Become a Sustainability Aficionado or Invite a Colleague!
Become a Sustainability Aficionado or invite one of your colleagues to join if you're already tuned into the program.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 15 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Land, Water, and Air
Produce No Waste for a Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 2 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Health and Well-Being
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 2 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationHow did replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs make you feel about reducing your energy consumption? What other small energy-saving actions could you take to reduce your environmental impact?
Shashank Yeri 4/28/2025 4:18 AMReplacing old bulbs with LED bulbs definitely gave me a sense of accomplishment! It's such a simple change but knowing that they use less energy and last longer makes me feel like I'm taking a small but effective step toward reducing my environmental impact. It’s one of those “why didn’t I do this sooner?” moments, especially when I think about how much energy regular incandescent bulbs used compared to LEDs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

In my life, I think the biggest sources of carbon emissions are probably related to transportation and energy use at home. I drive a car that runs on gasoline, and although I try to keep trips minimal, the emissions from that still add up. My home also uses energy for heating and cooling, which likely comes from non-renewable sources. To reduce my carbon footprint, I’m willing to make a few changes. First, I’m considering driving less and using public transportation more often or even biking for shorter trips. I could also look into switching to a more fuel-efficient or electric vehicle when the time comes. At home, I could start using energy-efficient appliances and be more conscious about turning things off when they’re not in use. I’m also interested in exploring renewable energy options if it’s available in my area. -

Reflect on Your Lifestyle ChoicesTake stock of your daily habits and how they affect the planet. Ask yourself:- How much energy do I consume? Consider your electricity use, heating, and transport.
- What do I eat? The environmental impact of your diet, such as the carbon footprint of meat vs. plant-based foods, can be huge.
- What do I waste? Track how much you throw away—are you contributing to landfill growth? How much plastic do you use?
- Do I use sustainable products? Look at the materials of the items you purchase and whether they are biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable.

Keeping trees hydrated during hot summer months is key to keeping them healthy and stress-free. Here’s how you can do that:1. Water Deeply and Infrequently- Watering deeply encourages deep root growth. Shallow watering causes roots to stay near the surface, making them more vulnerable to heat.
- Aim to water 1–2 times per week, depending on the tree type, age, and climate.
- Use a slow trickle from a hose or a soaker hose around the tree's drip line (where the branches end).
2. Water at the Right Time- Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and help water soak into the soil.
3. Mulch Generously- Apply 2–4 inches of organic mulch (like wood chips or bark) around the base of the tree, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk.
- Mulch retains moisture, keeps roots cooler, and suppresses weeds.
4. Protect Young or New Trees- Young trees (under 3 years old) need more frequent watering as their roots are still establishing.
- Consider using tree watering bags for slow, even water delivery.
5. Check Soil Moisture- Stick your finger or a screwdriver into the soil about 6 inches deep. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
- Moist (but not soggy) soil is the goal.

Reducing vehicle idling is a great way to save fuel, reduce emissions, and protect your engine. Here are some practical tips:
- Turn off your engine: If you're stopped for more than 10 seconds (except in traffic), it's more efficient to turn off your engine and restart it when you're ready to move
- Warm up by driving: Modern vehicles don't need to idle to warm up. Driving gently will warm up the engine and cabin faster
- Avoid drive-throughs: If the line is long, consider parking and going inside instead of idling in the drive-through
- Use hybrid vehicles: Hybrids automatically shut off the engine when not moving, reducing idling time
- Follow local regulations: Some areas have laws against unnecessary idling, so be aware of local rules to avoid fines
