Jose's actions
Sustainable Innovation
Support Resilient Powergrids
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 1 letters or emails per day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar storage).
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 2 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Land, Water, and Air
Advocate for Green Spaces
Green spaces improve air quality, support wildlife, and enhance well-being. I will call or write 1 public officials per day to advocate for more green spaces around my town, particularly in neighborhoods that currently lack equitable access to green spaces such as parks and gardens.
Wildlife
Protect Pollinators with a Plant or Mini-Habitat
Pollinators need a little help from their friends like us! I will take 1 steps to protect pollinators, such as planting a pollinator-friendly plant, installing a pollinator hotel, or by leaving leaf litter for pollinators to call home.
Health and Well-Being
Reduce Refined Sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.
Sustainable Innovation
Support a Crowdfunded Sustainability Innovation
Small contributions can drive big ideas. I will support a crowdfunded sustainability project to help bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to life and share the project on social media or on the Ecochallenge feed.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Sustainable Innovation
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Sustainable Innovation
Donate to or Support Low-Income Solar Initiatives
Clean energy should be accessible to all. I will support, donate, or volunteer to help programs that bring solar energy to low-income communities, helping create a more equitable and sustainable future.
Community and Connection
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Host a Bio-blitz
A bio-blitz helps youth engage with local biodiversity. I will organize or participate in a bio-blitz with young people to identify and document the plants, animals, and insects in our area.
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Community and Connection
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 2 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Community and Connection
Share Information about Local Resources
Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.
Community and Connection
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support Youth Climate Activists
Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 1 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.
Empowering the Next Generation
Donate to Support Emerging Leaders
Investing in young leaders helps shape the future. I will make a donation to a program or organization that supports emerging environmental leaders.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 55 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Sustainable Innovation
Explore Alternative Transportation Options
I will explore alternatives to using a car — such as walking, biking, carpooling, micro-mobility options, or public transit to reduce my carbon footprint. I will use alternative transit 1 miles per day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you learn about the youth climate activists you supported, and how do their efforts inspire you?
Jose Xavier 4/28/2025 1:37 AMDeep Understanding and Passion: Young activists demonstrate a profound understanding of the climate crisis and its interconnectedness with social justice issues. Their passion isn't just emotional; it's often backed by research and a clear grasp of the scientific realities.Courage and Resilience: They face significant challenges, from being dismissed or ridiculed to experiencing emotional distress from the urgency of the crisis. Yet, they persist with remarkable courage and resilience, continuing to advocate and organize.Innovative Approaches: They leverage social media, art, protests, and even legal action in creative and impactful ways to raise awareness and demand change. They are not bound by traditional methods and are quick to adapt their strategies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationHow does supporting programs for emerging leaders make you feel about investing in the next generation? What impact do you hope your donation will have on the future of sustainability leadership?
Jose Xavier 4/28/2025 1:35 AMSupporting programs for emerging leaders in sustainability fills me with optimism and a strong sense of purpose regarding investing in the next generation. It's inspiring to see individuals dedicate their energy and passion to such a critical area. Knowing that these programs exist and are being supported reinforces my belief in humanity's capacity to address the significant environmental challenges we face. It makes me feel hopeful that a new wave of informed and dedicated leaders will champion a more sustainable future. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat project or organization did you choose to support, and why did it resonate with you? What are some ways you can continue to support wildlife conservation beyond financial contributions?
Jose Xavier 4/25/2025 8:19 AMThe project I chose to support is the rewilding initiative in the Scottish Highlands, specifically focusing on organizations like Trees for Life and Rewilding Britain. This resonated with me for several key reasons:- Ecological Restoration at Scale: The vision of restoring native forests, peatlands, and natural processes across a significant landscape in the UK is incredibly compelling. It addresses habitat loss, climate change mitigation (through carbon sequestration), and biodiversity enhancement in a holistic way.
- Long-Term Vision: Rewilding is not a quick fix but a long-term commitment to ecological recovery, which aligns with the scale and urgency of the environmental challenges we face

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Jose Xavier 4/25/2025 8:18 AMBased on the information I've processed about traditional sharing economies (involving physical goods and services), the benefits are numerous:- Reduced Consumption and Waste: Sharing allows multiple people to use the same item, decreasing the need for individual ownership and thus reducing overall consumption and the associated waste from manufacturing and disposal.
- Cost Savings: Renting or borrowing items is often cheaper than buying them outright, saving individuals money. Sharing services can also provide income opportunities for those who lend out their assets.
- Increased Access: The sharing economy can provide access to goods and services that individuals might not otherwise be able to afford or justify owning (e.g., specialized tools, vacation homes).
- Stronger Communities: Sharing platforms and initiatives can foster a sense of community by connecting people and encouraging collaboration and mutual support.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat impressed you most about the youth-led project you supported, and how did your involvement help?
Jose Xavier 4/25/2025 8:07 AMProactive Problem-Solving: Instead of just lamenting the issue of electronic waste, these young people took direct action to address it at a local level. They identified a tangible problem in their community and devised a practical solution.Skill-Sharing and Intergenerational Learning: Their plan involved not only their own skills but also actively seeking out and collaborating with older, more experienced community members who had repair expertise. This fostered valuable intergenerational learning and connection.
