Anne's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 120 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

In Vermont, we talk a lot about dairy farm runoff in rivers and invasive species in lakes. Because we talk about it, I thought we had it in hand, yet I learned that 15% of lakes and 20% of rivers in Vermont have limited use due to pollution, and developed land sources are a significant contributor. This means roads, parking lots, industrial facilities all contribute to the problem. I better understand the problem all states face, and understand we really need to lessen our impact on the planet in all areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

Sharing economy is alive and well in my area of Vermont. We share and trade most things, and commonly check in with others before going to buy or putting things in the trash. This week is was shipping boxes. Amazon, Chewy and other shippers have in demand boxes for moving and organizing. I found someone moving and provided the boxes and packing materials to them.

What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

    Anne Wulffraat's avatar
    Anne Wulffraat 4/25/2024 9:25 AM
I've always preferred being outdoors. More than speaking about how it feels to be outside, I have unfortunately had opportunities in prior months to know what it feels like when I CAN'T get out. I found I was less grounded and less patient. I struggled to keep my equanimity. Working a long, challenging day when I've recently had good time outdoors was much easier than when I hadn't.

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

Being conscientious about water made our footprint lower than the average, but it's the virtual consumption that really got us, and in particular the food for the animals in the household. Instead of purchasing food, it's recommended we make our own. That's something we'll look into.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Anne Wulffraat 4/23/2024 8:51 AM
We're becoming more conscious and conscientious about water, noting where it's wasted. Using the dishwasher more frequently is probably the greatest challenge because it seems so counterintuitive. I'm also interested in seeing if it negatively impacts my electric bill this month. It's always a matter of finding the right balance.

Working with others builds the sense of community. It's for all of us that we're working to clean up our roadsides.

Land + Forests Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I am amazed after composting for some time, how little garbage I have. My recycling dwarfs my garbage. I use my composting in my vegetable gardens and around plants like delphiniums that are hungry for nutrients.

I love this! I also compost, and I have been learning about it for the last few years. My rich soil from my compost nourishes my garden. I just yesterday (Earth Day) was able to get one of my neighbors to want to compost her food scraps and contribute to my compost!!

It has long bothered me, and I don't know how to fix it, that healthy products (fruits and veggies) are often wrapped in plastic. Carrots come in bags, mixed salad greens come in plastic containers. I get the need to keep it sanitary, but I hate the plastic. It's all recyclable, but still, it seems ironic that the healthiest foods often come with such packaging.

I've been looking into products that are available. Paraphrasing from a reddit user who summed up what I saw very nicely: It looks like the best 2 filters you can get are Planetcare and Filtrol. There's a Gulp that's not yet available in North America.

Planetcare filters much more content(~90%), and takes back used filters to clean, reuse and after a while recycle them, and keeps the microfibers in storage until they can figure out a solution. However you have to keep buying new filters which can add up over time.

Filtrol is reusable, meaning only one time purchase and no shipping back and forth and no extra cost, but filters less(60%) and you have to figure out what to do with the fibers. Usually throw them away, which is slightly better than letting them get into our waters.

Planetcare is the better option of the two if you can afford the initial purchase and replacement filters. Otherwise, Filtrol is better than no filter at all.
