Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 45 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Shyanne Woolard 4/30/2024 11:01 AMEach person can control their waste amounts. I like to learn how I can further reduce the waste I create. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Shyanne Woolard 4/30/2024 10:59 AMJust by using a reusable water bottle, I saved a lot of plastic waste in one month. I plan to keep using a reusable water bottle even when this challenge is over.-
Janet Beach Davis 4/30/2024 1:15 PMYay! I love when the challenge lives on!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Shyanne Woolard 4/30/2024 10:57 AMPicking up litter made me appreciate my community more. We deserve to live in a clean neighborhood and the least we can do is pick up litter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Shyanne Woolard 4/01/2024 2:17 PMI took my baby on a walk around our new neighborhood. I moved into this house two weeks ago and have not explored the area yet. It was nice to spend time outside and getting familiar with my surroundings.
I noticed there were quite a few other people out on walks at the same time as us. Must be a good neighborhood to go for daily walks in! Also, there was practically no litter. I only found three pieces on our long walk. It's refreshing to see people hold onto their trash until they can dispose of it properly.-
Janet Beach Davis 4/03/2024 11:37 AMHopefully the weather will cooperate soon, and you can get outside more!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Shyanne Woolard 4/01/2024 2:10 PMMy diet choices fall within the Illinois guidelines. The Illinois guidelines include limiting consumption of predatory fish to one meal a week. The only fish that I like to eat is salmon and I can only afford to eat it once or twice a month anyways.-
Janet Beach Davis 4/03/2024 11:37 AMIllinois fish have a problem with mercury and PCBs from burning coal.
