Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Sherry Woodcock 4/25/2024 4:33 PMIt helps by not leaving a footprint from plastic and i do participate in the logging of trees for the gifts. Pictures is all I need for the experience. -
Sherry Woodcock 4/15/2024 7:13 PMI have always done my best to leave no footprint behind and in todays' market, it is definitely a challenge. Everything you buy anymore seems to have some sort of plastic in it, on it or made from it. I remember when there was only glass and paper to purchase in the stores. I started in my early 20's to challenge myself to avoid plastics and as I continue to get older, I have kept that promise to myself and to the earth. I hope that others stay committed in the years to come and to be proud of themselves in their waste production. I know I am! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Sherry Woodcock 4/15/2024 6:07 PMIt makes me be more aware of the need for people to help others, whether the elderly or animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Grow LocalHow did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.
Sherry Woodcock 4/11/2024 1:26 PMIt felt good to return native plants to my state in order to help the bees and butterflies. I planted Milkweed and Honeysuckle plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Sherry Woodcock 4/11/2024 1:24 PMI want to do my part by ensuring plastic does not end up in the ocean and landfills that will harm the ocean, as well as local wildlife. I do my best, if I have plastic, to ensure to cut it up, if it is not recyclable, in order to eliminate animals becoming trapped in it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Sherry Woodcock 4/11/2024 1:21 PMNone at all. With so many companies mailing and offering paper bags, it is relatively easy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Sherry Woodcock 4/10/2024 9:36 AMThe forests offer me peace and tranquility with the sounds and sights of nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Sherry Woodcock 4/10/2024 9:34 AMIt makes me realize that there are a lot of people who toss out there trash. Even though signs are posted, I think the community should co.e together and work of litter issues and maybe provide more recycling areas as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Sherry Woodcock 4/10/2024 9:32 AMI did not throw out as much as I thought I would, because I try my best not to waste food. But I did throw out some due to expiration dates. I will use my compost to plant flowers with for the bees and butterflies in my state.
