Matthew's actions

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

Reading about impact investing has made me realize that I need to conduct an audit on my funds and find funds that positively impact environmental outcomes. I will also more actively look for opportunities in which I can donate to better our world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I've found when out and about, it's pretty easy to spot litter just hanging around-- whether you're at a public park or in the parking lot of the grocery store. Certainly easy to do my part in picking it up and putting it in the back of my car for future discard.

My wife and love greenery and flowers - we have assorted flower beds across the front and along the sides of our home. On the back deck, we have a number of potted plants -- a pot of lavender and roses to name a couple.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

I did not know about the concept of cover crops until reading into regenerative agriculture. Something pretty simple in concept has proven to repair and maintain the quality of soil between harvest seasons and provide a natural filter of water back into our ecosystems.

Climate + Air Online Energy Audit
Where did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?

Although we just moved into a newly built home in Oct 2023, I still ran through a simple checklist. We have new, high-efficiency appliances, tankless water heater, and weather sealed basement and attic entries. The insulation is clearly marked at an acceptable level. During the build, we had 3rd party inspectors evaluate mid-build and post build to ensure construction was sound, insulation met standards, and the roof, brick, windows, and siding was appropriately sealed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Matthew Wirtz's avatar
    Matthew Wirtz 4/08/2024 6:37 AM
After taking the carbon footprint assessment from https://www.footprintcalculator.org/, I found that my "Overshoot day" is April 5th. Meaning, understanding what is renewable within a year, we would overshoot our resources on April 5th if everyone lived like me.

My footprint would require 3.8 Earths, lower than the US average of 5.0 Earths.

To improve my footprint, I'm going to consume more local produce, reducing the need for packaging. To start, I'm going to remove my reliance on K-cup coffee by getting whole beans, grinding, and starting a pour-over routine. I want to do what I can to eliminate unnecessary waste.

Thanks for sharing the site you used to calculate your carbon footprint! I am trying a new type of k-cup that is refillable.

My family recently moved to a new home at the end of 2023. We planted a new tree in our backyard! This will likely be the first of many more trees and vegetation including grapes, vegetables, and flowers.

I didn't get a straw when I picked up a breakfast sandwich and drink on my way home from running errands.

I spent time on my back deck enjoying the mild weather. I realized how many different types of birds live in my woods!

It is amazing how much energy it adds just to spend 30 minutes enjoying the outside!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

After a morning full of errands, I stopped to get a breakfast sandwich on my way home. This was definitely more of a "want" ... need to do better.
