Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

Learn how Businesses measure their Carbon footprint

Businesses can play a big role in reducing carbon emissions and it starts with measuring them. I will review the video and infographic provided to learn about the three Scopes of corporate greenhouse gas emissions, and how Donaldson is managing and reducing operational emissions at all our sites. I will think about and share my reduction ideas in the link provided.

My carbon footprint came out to be 7.9 tons which is a bit higher that I was expecting! Most of this comes from my travel habits. I drive to work, grocery shopping, and leisure activities as it is more convenient for me, as well as flying to visit my family. In the future I would like to explore more public transportation options for shopping and leisure activities. I would have to explore more options if I wanted to take public transportation to work. . .
As for visiting family, I would love to try and take the Amtrak to Chicago! I rode this once from Wisconsin Dells back to the Twin Cities and the experience was fun and peaceful compared to flying or driving. The next time I plan to be with family for a longer period of time, I will try to consider the train more!

I think a lot about the drive to leisure activities- I run a lot, and often end up driving somewhere to do it for the sake of a route/company. I'm trying to change the habit, or at least make it "worth it"- for example, not driving anywhere for a run shorter than 4-5 miles. There are not a lot of public transport options in my city, but they're working on making it safer for cycling, which really helps with closer errands or activities.

What was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?

I think what makes hosting a rewarding experience is that you can witness connections being made that are new and old. I hosted a small family gathering and while we all knew each other, there are some parts of my family that do not see each other often. It is nice to see people catch up and talk about future plans being made. I think the only thing that could have been improved was more opportunities for connections such as games or entertainment!

I have incorporated reusable bags into my weekly shopping routine. I find that reusable bags are typically a lot easier to use and can fit more items than your typical plastic bag. I also have found it very convenient to carry a reusable bag on me at all times, so it is there if I need it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
What did you learn about the businesses or owners you supported? How does shopping locally contribute to a more vibrant and resilient community?

This weekend I shopped at a local grocery store. It is nice to know that while I complete needed tasks, I am supporting people in my community!
