Taylor's actions
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Taylor Whitehead 4/10/2024 10:00 AMPlanning out our meals helps us reduce food waste because we are intentional with our leftovers. It is so helpful to create a weekly game plan, but I do struggle with creativity because it is so easy to make the same meals over and over again.-
Traci Bergmann 4/10/2024 10:35 AMI have the same struggle with creativity. I follow a few accounts on social media that share meal prep recipes. It really helps me.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Taylor Whitehead 4/05/2024 7:07 AMMy family and I intentionally declutter by donating our items that are still in great condition. Items that have lived a full life tend to get upcycled in our house. This way we are not contributing to landfills.-
Taylor Whitehead 4/10/2024 10:51 AMWe love to support Hope Chest by donating to them because it benefits Community Hospice. -
Kat Marian 4/05/2024 9:06 AMThis is awesome! What is your go to place to drop off goods locally? Thank you!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Taylor Whitehead 4/05/2024 7:05 AMI’m constantly educating myself and challenging myself to learn more about this topic.-
Kat Marian 4/05/2024 9:07 AMAgreed, especially here in Central Valley.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Taylor Whitehead 4/05/2024 7:04 AMI carry reusable bags in purse and car. I never need to use single use plastic bags because I’m always prepared with my own bags whether I’m at the grocery store or a restaurant, I always have my own bags-
Julie Gonsalves 4/05/2024 7:28 PMIf I forget my bags, I load my items back in the cart and unload them into the car -
Jennifer Daniels 4/05/2024 9:05 AMI've noticed so many people don't bring bags anymore! If I happen to forget, I just go without. Love you do this so consistently!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Taylor Whitehead 4/04/2024 11:02 AMI had to attend a conference in Long Beach. Rather than flying, I drove. I avoided 814 miles in the sky.-
Kat Marian 4/04/2024 12:19 PMAmazing!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
-
Kat Marian 4/04/2024 12:21 PMAgreed, I play a mind game: if I had all the money in the world, would I still want it? Often the answer is: nope!
