Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 12

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 45 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

    Action Track: Community Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

Planting trees is good for my personal mental, physical, and spiritual health, first, because of the exercise necessary to exert the effort to plant the tree. Planting the tree makes me feel good, knowing it will live on for generations and that it is a small step in the right direction that many people could do to make a big impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Christina White 4/24/2024 4:34 AM
I am taking a reusable water bottle to work, and now also to my second job as well. I am realizing we consume a lot of plastic for things that are not necessary.

Volunteering enhances my community and changes my relationship with it, by making me more familiar and comfortable in it. It also builds a relationship with people I would maybe not normally interact with.

I emit the most carbon through traveling. Finding ways, such as selecting a more environmentally friendly taxi and uber, and reducing my flights within the United States.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I actually have a long-term plan to plant MANY native species into my yard. I want to be the prettiest garden on my street. I love the idea it supports the local wildlife, while also giving me the suburban paradise feel I crave. Some plants I planted were an eastern rosebud tree, river birch, and purple coneflowers. I am also considering a dogwood tree.

Picking up litter connects me more to my community because it is my way of taking responsibility for the area I reside in and making sure I show it the same respect I would my home.
