Stefanie's actions
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 60 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Climate & Ecosystems
Earth Hour
Join the Biggest Hour for Earth! On March 25, join this global movement by spending 60 minutes doing something positive for our planet. Snap a photo and submit to bluegoesgreen@archgroup.com to earn Ecochallenge points! Learn more at www.earthhour.org.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 4 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 10 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Economy & Communities
Replace Manual Thermostats
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 46 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 1 documentaries about education or work.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 1 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG 10
Each day, I will track my purchases to identify my spending habits. This will allow me to see what purchases can be reduced.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 1 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Health & Equity

Stefanie Wesolowski 4/29/2023 4:21 PMI really enjoy watching all these documentaries on interesting topics. The producers of these films really create interesting conversations that not only really get their audience thinking, but inspire them to get more involved and active in their communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or PeaceWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/29/2023 4:16 PMWhite Hot the rise and fall of Abercrombie and Fitch on Netflix. Learned how passive aggressive entitled racist behavior affects customers, youth, and society as a whole. The company’s branding policy effected more than the people they employed and the people who applied for jobs. They affected how people perceived and valued themselves. High Schoolers and College Students developed negative thoughts and feelings about themselves because they didn’t fit A&F’s brand of All American and in some cases didn’t even fit into the clothes they were selling. Their clothes had a negative climate impact because they were mass producing cheap clothes that they burned when they got in hot water with the public and their clothes and brand messaging had nothing to do with each other. They had a huge carbon footprint for producing bad clothing and traveling all over the world to make sex pictures. -
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/27/2023 2:34 PMI've been very diligent in washing my plastics before putting them in the recycling bin. I read somewhere that if you have any item in your recycle bin that has food on it, they won't use any of the containers in the whole bin. They will end up getting trashed.-
Parin Patel 4/27/2023 7:56 PMAnd you'll have a cleaner recycling bin! I've been doing that for years and the bin is clean doesn't make the garage smell since we can't store ours outside.

Stefanie Wesolowski 4/26/2023 2:58 PMFlowers are blooming on all my trees, but my lilac trees look sad like they didn't whether this winter very well. I am going to have to figure out what I can do to bring the lilac trees back to fuller life so they have an incredible bloom next spring. -
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/25/2023 4:48 PMSeeing all the flowers blooming for spring is so renewing for the soul. -
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/24/2023 6:43 PMMy community has a sewage system issue where items being poured down the sink or flushed down the toilet are causing blockages in the sewage pipes. The main issue that the HOA is finding when fixing the system are people putting flushable wipes down the drains. Although I do not use this product, through community communications regarding this issue, I have learned about other things that can clog a sewage system and how to alternatively dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Having a community that shares ideas like this has been helpful by making me mindful of issues that I never was aware of when I was a renter. -
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/24/2023 6:38 PMI chose to join the challenge because I felt I needed to check in with myself on how environmentally conscious I am, to stay motivated to do my part for the environment and find out what more I can do to combat climate change. I chose actions that I was interested in and knew were achievable for me this year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Volunteer in My CommunityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/24/2023 2:16 PMI think my most memorable volunteer experience was volunteering to hand out food at a food pantry. Putting together those care packages and seeing what food options people have for those that struggle to put food on the table was eye opening and memorable. Made me think differently about what food I donate to others. I would like to find a place where I can volunteer to give out hot meals to those in need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Donate FoodWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/24/2023 2:13 PMI donate food to help others who are going through rough times and to share my good fortune with. Not having to worry about where the money is going to come from to pay my bills or buy food is a privilege no one should take for granted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Plant a TreeHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Stefanie Wesolowski 4/24/2023 2:12 PMIt is a physical activity where you are exposed to nature and sunlight. You are breathing in fresh air and planting something that will continue to benefit your health by releasing oxygen into the air for decades.
