Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Reduce Refined Sugar

Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Offer a Skill or Service

Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

I have been slacking on logging in due to a crazy work week, on top of school. I am going to try and start the challenge back up again. No shame in trying again! Better than giving up right?

I just moved houses today and talked to my neighbors. They were very kind and it reminded me how thankful I am for the ability to connect with others.

People don't do this anymore. I remember when we moved into our house, our neighbors brought over welcome gifts! I was stunned, I couldn't believe that. I only saw that in movies!

    • 8-DAY STREAK
Today I started to reduce my water use at work as well. When washing dishes I try and get as many dishes washed as I could before having to drain the water again. I used to drain the water pretty often because it didn’t seem soapy enough after a while but that was very unnecessary. I also filled the sinks up much less than normal. Now I realize how silly it was to fill up the sinks as much as I used to. I’m encouraging my coworkers to do the same!

I usually get anxiety leading up to scheduling appointments for some reason, especially doctors appointments. After scheduling my check-up I honestly felt so much better, like a weight had been taken off my shoulders. I now realize that just getting something over with feels so much better than stressing about doing it, lol.

How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

I hand wash my dishes, so instead of letting my faucet run while I am scrubbing dishes, I will start by turning my water off and only using it to 1) fill up my sink with soapy water one time 2) only have the water running while I am rinsing my dishes.

What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

    • 8-DAY STREAK
I would say the thing that surprised me the most is just how much water I use everyday without even noticing. I was doing things like letting the water run while I do the dishes, or brush my teeth, which is wasting tons of water in just minutes. To reduce water consumption, I already started taking shorter showers, but also I could invest in water-efficient appliances to make a big difference as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?

I wouldn't say I was "addicted to sugar" but this challenge isn't easy, either. I do crave sugary things, especially my sweet tea, but after learning just how bad these refined sugars are for our bodies, I would rather skip out on them then take the risk any longer.

I'm starting small, cutting down gradually rather than doing anything drastic. And I'm trying to be more aware of WHY I think I want sugar. I hope I'll show significant progress by the end of this Ecochallenge.

I would agree with you. It is hard to cut out something sugary, especially when you like it, but the benefits definitely outweigh the costs of consuming those unhealthy products.
