Anna Maria's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 110 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and MeWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/30/2024 3:25 AMHighly recommend the courses Kiss the Ground offer for learning more about regenerative agriculture or gardening. I recall watching a video and having a wow moment - footage from space showed how areas of the earth heat up when the land is bare and cools when land is covered again in crops. Healthy soils really do create healthy people and healthy planet. If like myself, you don't have a farm, creating a garden in the backyard is a great place to begin the regenerative practice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and WaterHow did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/30/2024 2:01 AMHave washed clothes in wash bags but not actually sure they catch the fine particles of microplastics. Choosing clothes made of natural fibres is probably the best option. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/30/2024 1:48 AMYou know when you plant a seed, seedling or sapling you've been part of a far greater process. We are not separate from the trees, connected in mutual exchange, our very existence depends on them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/29/2024 2:51 PMWater footprint was pretty good. Still always more you can do though. I'm going to pop indoor plants outdoors for watering when there's showers or light rain and reseed small areas where lawn is bare, so water is retained in the soil.-
Melissa Luedtke 4/29/2024 3:04 PMMy house plants and flowers seem to stand up tall when they get a little drink of that natural rain water!! I try to collect rain water and only water my flowers with that because they grow so much better I think🌳🌎❤️

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/29/2024 2:40 PMWas surprised to discover dishwasher tablets aren't so good for the water and environment, even though they contain less of the harsh nasty phosphates and chemicals. So, what removes all the grime in the wash? The addition of GE enzymes!
I find washing dishes in the sink conserves more water and there are more options to decide what to wash with. For light washes can use a soap bar. Still use cleaning products made from citrus peel and vinegar also - learnings from a previous Ecochallenge. Thank's Ecochallenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Low Water GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/29/2024 5:05 AMProbably the most prominent concern after extreme weather events would be flooding. Some new housing developments now include no lawn or minimal green areas. What impact will this have on climate change, biodiversity and the pressure on infrastructure? Litter, forestry or any other debris that collects in drains or waterways, exacerbates flooding concerns. Water needs room to flow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/29/2024 3:35 AMAfter deadheading a few of the dried fennel seedheads a few weeks ago I scattered them over the compost heap. Seedlings are already emerging so I'll be transferring these to the vegetable garden and the compost will be used to replenish and enrich soil in garden and vegetable beds. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/28/2024 3:45 AMAfter reading about shrimp farming will probably be less likely to purchase shrimp. Fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, are some good alternative low carbon options while maintaining a balanced consumption of white meat/red meat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/28/2024 3:05 AMInteresting question. one that depends more on the farming practice and how the animal is raised rather than eating more or less meat. Tilling, spraying soils and crops with toxic chemicals such as glyphosate has devastatingly negative impacts on the health of the planet, biodiversity and humanity. Regenerative agriculture on the other hand offers a solution: one that creates healthy soils, improves water quality, increases biodiversity and overall, a healthier global population and planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Anna Maria Waterhouse 4/27/2024 4:05 AMNow the fruit trees have finished flowering and producing fruit, the bumblebees and honeybees are making a beeline for the perennial flowers blooming in the garden - asters, calendula and pineapple sage.
