Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 20 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 10 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/29/2024 10:09 AMI have not tried to make my own cleaning products yet, as I read it after going to the supermarket. But I've made a list and I commit to at least try to do 2 different products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Online Energy AuditWhere did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/23/2024 9:10 AMFirst of all, the video of the Home audit was very good. I did one for my home and I need to do at least 3 improvements and a critical check. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/18/2024 9:00 AMI learnt about microplastics and how they can affect our health. It was a scary read for sure.
On the single use plastic subject, here in Mexico we've had laws for about 5-7 years now, prohibiting the use of plastic bags in the supermarket and clothing stores. I started to use them way before that, as well as water bottles. It's good to see now more and more people using their own tote bags in the mall and supermarkets.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/15/2024 9:38 AMThe video on how the bottled water was created and its repercussions was eye opening. I moved to a reusable water bottle years ago and it's awesome to see that many people have joined. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/12/2024 8:26 AMI liked doing the calculators. There's some things that I can improve like shopping locally, that's my commitment, other advices I can't do like placing solar panels, I live in a apartment and it's just not possible due to the construction type and my neighbors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/12/2024 8:07 AMI've always been concerned about food waste, I try to buy as little as possible. the best example is when buying the large portion at a fast food chain. It's enticing to fall into buying more when it cost less, but do you actually consume it? more importantly, do you eat it because you need it, or because it's just there?
It was also good to learn the numbers, it's always scary to see the actual numbers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/09/2024 7:22 AMI already used a low amount of oil to cook; I use a spray and also went air-fryer during COVID, but I never knew how to get rid of the oil. I was surprised to learn about the reuse using filters. I'll try to do that and advise my family on this practice.
Sadly in my city there is no recycle center for oil, at least not since I've investigated years ago, I'll search again. If not the alternative to store it and deposit in the trash is good, we shouldn't definitely never just pour it down the drain. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Eduardo Villarreal 4/01/2024 9:37 AMI learnt about the "virtual water" concept. I will take this account to reduce my water footprint.
