Sarah's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 20 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 20 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 20 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/30/2024 8:06 AM
In our society, money is power. Intentionally choosing where our investments go towards is quite important and can have great impacts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/30/2024 8:03 AM
I can help support healthy farming practices by researching and supporting local farms that practice regenerative agriculture. I learned about the many environmental benefits that regenerative agriculture brings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/30/2024 8:02 AM
A sharing economy promotes the reuse of items without the need for intense consumerism. The benefits of a sharing economy not only provide resources for those in need at a lower cost, but also fosters positive and longer lasting relationships.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Online Energy Audit
Where did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:26 PM
I did an audit at school and found that the answers were somewhat shocking. Compared to at home, my personal energy usage is less, but overall being at school makes me less efficient. I can definitely make some more conscience choices to reduce my energy usage at school.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Save the Bees
What did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:25 PM
There are plenty of native plants in my area that bees love. I found that contacting local gardens is a great way to learn what bees loves. Local wildflowers are always a good option too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal Products
What new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:24 PM
I found that my products perhaps are not the most environmentally friendly. I will use them fully and then seek alternatives that support the mission to save the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:23 PM
Being more cognizant of the choices we make, especially when abroad is quite important. Making sure to support local communities and buy sustainable souvenirs should be a given for all travelers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:12 PM
Volunteering is also particularly special. Working with local organizations to benefit the area is of particular importance to me. I love to meet those in the community and see the impact that my actions have on the betterment of an area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity + Wildlife Endangered Species
What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

    Sarah Vigliotti's avatar
    Sarah Vigliotti 4/29/2024 6:11 PM
I learned about some endangered species, but also sought out some extinct ones as well. This gives insight into how past environmental choices have impacted the species on this earth and what we can do to protect them in the future. I learned more broadly about conservation efforts seen around the world to keep regional endangered species safe.
