Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 15 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 1

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 15 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

I learned that tourism can harm wildlife by damaging habitats and disturbing animals and produces a lot of CO2 which is bad for the environment aswell. I can make better choices by visiting eco-friendly places and avoiding activities that exploit animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What native species did you learn about in your area, and how do they contribute to your local ecosystem or community? How might your community change if these native species disappeared?

I learned about the coastal sage scrub plant, which is native to San Diego and provides food and shelter for animals. If these plants disappeared, local wildlife would lose important habitat and our hillsides would be more at risk for erosion.

How do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?

Pollinators help grow a lot of the food I eat and keep nature around me alive. I can help them by planting native flowers in my backyard for them to keep thriving.

Pollinators do have some negative effects on people as well as ALL the good they do. Allergies are real especially in the humid hot area I live in and UGH it is not always an enjoyable time of year. Environmental allergies are sometime worse than food allergies because you can avoid the cause with food, environmental issue can not be avoided as easily.

How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

    Thomas Vidon's avatar
    Thomas Vidon 4/28/2025 9:14 AM
I made sure to do a pre-rinse on my dishes so that they were all clean coming out the dish washer and never needed a second wash. Other small changes I made was taking a little shorter showers and didn't just sit under the water, and made sure to be efficient.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I was very surprised about the fact that I use around 1700 gallons of water per day. Additionally, since my carbon footprint was very high I was astonished about the fact that I was under the US average for water use. To reduce my water use I am definitely going to try to take shorter showers since I always like to stay in their for around 10 minutes.

Thanks for sharing. You've inspired me to calculate my water use... though the though kind of scares me. It's amazing how it all adds up - but encouraging how we can learn new habits to use less!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Thomas Vidon's avatar
    Thomas Vidon 4/28/2025 9:09 AM
I emit the most carbon in traveling, especially driving and traveling through the country or out of the country. Additionally, using better resourced foods and eating less meat would help much more. I will try to eat more seasonal foods and try to integrate more vegetarian meals in my weeks.
