Chaney's actions

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

Learn about the Magic of Seaweed

Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 20 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED

    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:54 PM
Widespread changes in food packaging could massively benefit the environment. Changing to more eco-friendly options would reduce plastic pollution drastically, and reduce fossil fuel emissions that cause global warming.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
How did replacing old bulbs with LED bulbs make you feel about reducing your energy consumption? What other small energy-saving actions could you take to reduce your environmental impact?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:52 PM
Replacing old bulbs helps us conserve electricity that would've been otherwise been wasted. Other energy saving actions I can take include turning off the lights and AC when i'm not home and unplugging appliances that aren't being used.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Sustainable Innovation
What new insights did you gain about seaweed’s role in combating environmental challenges? Were you surprised how many products you may already be using contain seaweed?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:49 PM
I learned that seaweed is extremely important to our ocean ecosystems and helps the environment by absorbing a large amount of carbon. They are also very environmentally friendly to farm, making them an eco friendly food source for humans to produce.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How can schools play a bigger role in shaping future environmental leaders, and how can you support them?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:37 PM
Schools can play a bigger role in shaping the future environmental leaders by instilling a care and awareness for environmental issues from an early age. By starting early with this generation of youth, we can inspire future generations to take action and care for our Earth. We can support them by leading the way and providing resources for them to learn.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Empowering the Next Generation
What did you and the young person learn from conducting the audit together, and how did it change their understanding of sustainability? Did anything change about your understanding of sustainability?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:31 PM
By conducting an audit, my sister and I learned just how much energy we consume in our home everyday. This will impact our view of sustainability and push us to conserve energy when we can, in order to reduce our environmental footprints.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you enjoy most about mentoring a young person, and what impact do you think it had on their growth? Did you have any challenges or ah-hah moments with your mentoring experience?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:22 PM
By mentoring young people, we can impact their way of thinking and shape them to be the best people they can as they grow up. I enjoy sharing information and interacting with kids, they always have the best imaginations which can lead to more creative brainstorming. Sometimes it can be frustrating, but it is important to stay patient.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
What was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?

    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:12 PM
Bringing people together for a gathering is rewarding knowing that it helps us stay more connected as a community. There are always challenges in hosting recently, as many of us have extremely busy schedules, however clearing a time to reconnect with friends is so worth it for our mental well-being every once in a while.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 11:09 PM
Belonging to a group is important for mental health and well-being, as well as to be more involved in your local community. I am involved in multiple local groups that help me to stay busy, while also supporting me and providing an outlet to deal with stress. By staying connected with peers we can better support each other every day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air

    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 10:50 PM
What surprised me most about my water footprint was how much water waste I contribute to indirectly by supporting the meat industry and consuming processed foods. I can make a change in my footprint by trying to have more meatless meals. I can also work into my routine having shorter showers and doing laundry less often only when loads are full.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did collecting rainwater influence your understanding of sustainable water use? What tasks or activities could benefit most from rainwater collection in your household?

    Chaney VanMeter's avatar
    Chaney VanMeter 4/30/2025 10:35 PM
Although we don't get much rain here in San Diego, I learned that using a rain barrel can help contribute to reducing water usage at home. Collected rainwater can be used to water plants and trees in our backyard, and water our lawn. Collecting water is a much more environmentally friendly alternative to running sprinklers everyday.
