When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED

The world’s oldest trees are 4,600 year old Bristlecone pines in the USA.

The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus Longaeva) has been deemed the oldest tree in existence, reaching an age of over 5,000 years old. The Bristlecone pines’ success in living a long life can be attributed to the harsh conditions it lives in. Very cold temperatures associated with high winds, in addition to a slow growth rate, create dense wood, meaning some years they grow so slowly, they don’t add a ring of growth.

Paper from trees can be recycled 6 times.

Paper comes from trees and can be recycled a maximum of six times, after which, its fibers become too weak to hold together.

Around 27,000 trees are cut down each day

The world has over 3.04 trillion trees in the world. However, 27,000 of them are cut down daily to make toilet paper. This translates to about 9.8 million trees annually. One single recycled edition of the New York Times newspaper could save 75,000 tree
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:28 AM
I learned that my water footprint encompasses not only direct water use (like drinking and showering) but also indirect water use, such as the water embedded in the products I consume, like food and clothing. To reduce my water footprint, I plan to:

Conserve water: Practice water-saving habits such as taking shorter showers, fixing leaks promptly, and using water-efficient appliances.
Reduce meat consumption: Adopting a more plant-based diet can significantly reduce water usage since animal agriculture requires large amounts of water.
Choose sustainable products: Opt for products with lower water footprints and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
Support water-saving initiatives: Advocate for policies and practices that promote water conservation and sustainable water management in my community and beyond."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Choose Renewable Energy
If you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:25 AM
    1. Energy-efficient appliances: Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances and electronics to lower electricity consumption.
    2. Smart thermostats: Install smart thermostats to optimize heating and cooling and reduce energy waste.
    3. Unplug devices: Unplug electronics when not in use to prevent standby power consumption.
    4. LED lighting: Replace traditional bulbs with LED lights, which are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan.
    5. Energy-saving habits: Practice energy-saving habits such as turning off lights when leaving a room, using natural light during the day, and air-drying clothes instead of using a dryer.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:24 AM
Restructuring my trip involved careful planning and consideration of alternative transportation options such as trains, buses, or carpooling. By prioritizing destinations with efficient public transit systems or choosing locations closer to home, I aimed to minimize the need for air travel. Additionally, I explored virtual meeting options for professional engagements to reduce the necessity of flying for work-related purposes. In the future, I can further avoid air travel by consolidating trips, opting for video conferencing when feasible, and embracing slow travel methods such as trains or boats for longer journeys.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Online Energy Audit
Where did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:23 AM
I conducted an energy audit at home and discovered several areas where energy efficiency could be improved. By replacing old appliances with energy-efficient models, sealing drafts, upgrading insulation, and using programmable thermostats, I learned that I could significantly reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills while also minimizing my environmental impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:22 AM
The primary areas where I emit the most carbon typically include transportation (such as driving or flying), energy usage (especially from electricity and heating). To reduce my carbon footprint, I can make changes such as using public transportation, carpooling, biking, or walking whenever possible. Additionally, I can switch to renewable energy sources, improve energy efficiency in my home, and adopt a more plant-based diet or choose sustainably sourced food options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

    Shipra Upadhyay's avatar
    Shipra Upadhyay 4/15/2024 3:21 AM
Consumption choices can have significant impacts on wildlife and other communities. For example, purchasing products derived from unsustainable or overexploited natural resources can harm ecosystems and disrupt habitats. Similarly, supporting industries with poor environmental practices can contribute to pollution and habitat destruction. Conversely, making environmentally conscious choices such as buying sustainably sourced products or supporting eco-friendly businesses can help mitigate these negative effects and promote the health of wildlife and communities.
