David's actions
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 45 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
David Umana 4/28/2024 8:12 PMThe largest portion of my carbon emission is correlated to my consumption, about 3.9 tons each year. Moving forward, I plan to make changes in what I eat to reduce this output by paying more attention to products with palm oil and by growing, hunting, and fishing my own food.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
David Umana 4/28/2024 7:58 PMI learned today that my water footprint is below that of the US Average. My water footprint stands at 1,306 Gallons/Day while the US Average stands at 1,802 Gallons/Day. Moving forward, I plan to reduce my water usage by taking showers that last under 5min and also using colder water since it uses less energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
David Umana 4/28/2024 7:25 PMThe hardest part of having a Zero Waste Day was honestly just remembering to not create waste. It sounds like a pretty easy thing to do but throughout the day I had to keep stopping myself from doing unnecessary things like going out to the vending machine to buy a snack because the wrapper is considered waste production or even using a plastic water bottle which I do quite often. What I learned about myself and my habits is that I tend to create waste with little regard to the consequences of doing so. Moving forward, I plan to think about the amount of waste something creates before purchasing something new or throwing something away that can be reused.-
Jeanne Poirier 4/28/2024 7:30 PMFor me the reminder was every time I wanted to reach for the waste bin. Hope to keep my hands off it and make different choices. Really a good challenge!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
David Umana 4/28/2024 7:14 PMI participated in a sharing economy by creating a group chat with two friend that live on campus so that we could share common household items. My friends and I benefited by sharing our cleaning products to clean our dorms. By doing so, we didn't need to go out and buy excessive amounts of the products that we both didn't need and wouldn't use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
David Umana 4/28/2024 6:59 PMThe act of picking up litter connects me more to my community because I'm actively engaging in making it a cleaner environment for others as well as a cleaner ecosystem overall. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
David Umana 4/23/2024 3:35 PMToday I went for a walk down the trail here at CSUCI, specifically the Old Dairy Rd trail. I think that the benefits of going on this short trip were that it helped me settle down mentally and actually helped me ease out on my stress which was why I decided to go for the walk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
David Umana 4/23/2024 3:32 PMVolunteering in my community enhances my relationship with it because it allows me to engage with new people who live in my area and in some cases allows me to visit places in my area that I never new existed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Carry My TrashThis is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?
David Umana 4/23/2024 3:29 PMAlthough I've yet to complete this task, my experiences so far have opened my eyes as to how much waste I produce on my own in such a short amount of time. Moving forward, I plan to reduce my waste production by incorporating more recycling and composting into my routine schedule. -
David Umana 4/23/2024 3:25 PMMy Earth Month Ecochallenge 2024 has been going great so far, its been making me get out a lot more to complete some of my daily actions and I've also been learning a lot about my own impacts towards the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
David Umana 4/18/2024 3:54 PMMy household can prepare to become more resilient to changing water situations by purchasing containers to capture and store rain water. This will help us conserve water that would have otherwise gone to waste.
