Cheryl's actions

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

    To Keep AMERICA beautiful!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

Buy only that day what I can fix that same day. And not buying snacks when hungry in grocery store is hard but been trying to stay away from processed foods.

There's a balance to buying only what you plan to use, and wasting fuel by making repeated trips if you wouldn't be traveling otherwise (I work from home and don't do a lot of driving, so that balance point may be different for you than it is for me). I tend to buy what we will use for one week, and only make one trip if I can manage. This saves us a couple gallons of gas compared to going out to the store every day. Agreed on not getting processed foods (and on trying to not shop hungry!).

Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

I really do not use oil to cook with but would never put down drain.
