I am looking forward to continually sharing posts about innovations that either promises to or has already promoted sustainability efforts. The first one I'd like to discuss here is quite controversial - it's a nuclear energy solution. Specifically, I'd like to touch on nuclear fuel recycling. A major part of the problem with nuclear fission reactors is the nuclear waste left over. There's been some promising developments in both research labs and commercial businesses that can recover some of the spent nuclear fuel and produce either reusable nuclear fuel or other elements with medical or industrial uses. I have been particularly keen on "fast reactors" that can take recycled nuclear fuel and potentially burn that fuel for much longer, all the way until it becomes far less hazardous or radioactive in the end. Names like Sam Altman's Oklo or Bill Gates's TerraPower have emerged to commercialize fast reactors. They don't have a reactor online yet; the science seems to be solid so far. If their reactors do as they have promised, nuclear energy may end up being a very viable energy source.

I am SO glad to have found Coursera here in the Ecochallenge site! I have been learning more about how some of the largest companies and governments are guided by the Sustainable Development Goals through a Coursera course. Now I can take action for what I have learned and represent Coursera itself here in this platform. How's that for a full-circle?

Disclaimer: This post is for educational purposes only and should not be considered financial advice. Investing in anything, even things that help the planet, involves risks, so always do your own research and maybe consult a professional before making any moves.

I'm proud to say I have been an impact investor for over a year now, investing over $1000 into various renewable energy stocks and forest steward companies (not just "ESG" funds) for the long-term. Even better, much of my portfolio consists of sustainable companies that have had a long history paying dividends of over 3% over several years. (Here is one example; note the disclaimer.) These investments to me reinforces the idea that I do not have to sacrifice my own financial sustainability for the planet's sustainability. In fact, a sustainable world can empower many others to become financially successful too.
