Mike's Actions
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 60 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 30 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that shows how sustainability / the energy transition already shows up in my daily life (e.g., electric vehicles, paper packaging…), and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate & Ecosystems
Choose Sustainable Seafood Options
SDG 14
Using Seafood Watch's list, I will enjoy 1 sustainable seafood meals each day.
Climate & Ecosystems
Attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar
On Wed 19th April, I will attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar to learn about the importance of individual action in our collective journey to sustainability.
Climate & Ecosystems
Sign up to receive news on Sustainability at Emerson
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY and WITH news.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE EMERSON'S SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING
I will take at least one of the Emerson Global Environmental Sustainability Training modules available on the Global Learning Center to learn more about this important topic for the company.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.

Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Mike Train 4/28/2023 8:55 AMI managed to convert several short air trips into train segments during trip to Europe. Train travel takes a bit more time and some planning but is possible and even preferred. Also learned how to use several local trains/trams/bus systems. -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or NatureWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Mike Train 4/27/2023 7:20 AMI watched a BBC doc series called The Green Planet hosted by David Attenborough. The first episode is Tropical Worlds and explores all the action taking place in a very busy and complex tropical forest ecosystem. The time lapse videography is amazing and showcases how the plants, insects, animals, and fungi make their moves and defend themselves in search of sunlight and nutrition. It also highlights the dependencies between all species. The drama is amazing and very appropriate for sll ages. Additonal episodes feature water worlds, seasonal worlds, desert worlds, and human worlds. -
Reflection QuestionHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Mike Train 4/26/2023 3:01 AMHealth, fresh air, awareness of our environment, face to face contact - we need these for our physical and mental well-being. -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Choose Sustainable Seafood OptionsWhat was the tastiest sustainable seafood meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
-
