Ivana's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Visit the Earth Day Celebration in the Agora
On Monday April 22 from 10:30-2:00pm, the Sustainability Office is hosting an Earth Day celebration! Come and learn about sustainability and climate action initiatives taking place at JAC and in the wider community. Take part in a workshop and pick up some seedlings or house plants!
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 15 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Ivana Tough 4/22/2024 7:59 AMWe have a park and creek next to my home that is the most convenient option for me when I need to escape in nature. This weekend, however, I took the time to walk down to the lake and walked further than I ever had before. It was a bit chilly, so it was extremely refreshing for the great trifecta - body, mind and soul.
I especially appreciated the wind for keeping the millions of baby mosquitos away! -
Ivana Tough 4/22/2024 6:02 AMWent for a stroll by the little creek in my neighbourhood and I am SO disappointed with how much litter there is! I'm going to try and mobilize a clean-up group with neighbours before the grass and leaves take over and hide the trash for another season :(
No picture to share - too gross :(-
Melissa Tomecz 4/22/2024 5:00 PMWhat a great initiative! I agree that it is sad how the Spring sometimes means garbage reveal. People think that if they just throw their stuff in the snow, no one will notice ... until it melts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Ivana Tough 4/15/2024 1:14 PMGrowing up my family was always into garage sales, and this still rings true today. To further this initiative, I have taken a very strong liking to my municipality's 'Buy Nothing' groups. I have given away so much, people are so grateful; it really is a wonderful feeling being able to reclaim storage space and to put a smile on a neighbours' face! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Ivana Tough 4/15/2024 8:50 AMYeeesss my water footprint is considered low!
I will keep being conscious of my water usage. I recently learned about rain water barrels and although I don't necessarily need one on my condo balcony, I will dump my unfinished water glasses into my plants!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Ivana Tough 4/11/2024 9:20 AMI love the challenge of a zero waste day! I try to manage one at least once a week. I find it easiest when I come to work, or when I have an extremely lounge-y day at home on the weekend.
I always try to be conscious of my purchases and have minimal single serve plastic products, but it is always satisfying when I manage to pull it off!-
Ann Lloyd 4/11/2024 9:51 AMWay to go! I find it challenging when one of the first things I do is put in my contact lenses which come in non-recyclable plastic! I didn't think about this when I bought daily wear lenses, but will in the future!

Ivana Tough 4/09/2024 11:47 AMMy weather app lied to me this morning and said we would be expecting rain.
Motivated to spend time outside during lunch in all weather, I chose to wear rainboots.
Surprise surprise, I brought my indoor shoes home last week and forgot I had nothing to change in to!
Oh well, I clomped around in the sunshine with my rainboots anyway.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Ivana Tough 4/05/2024 10:21 AMThe carbon footprint I emit for travel is 2/3 of my score and it's higher than I would like.
Given where I live it would take an additional few hours to commute per day by public transport which would require a significant lifestyle change on my end.
I do, however, meticulously plan out my routes when I have several stops to make to minimize unnecessary back-tracking.
Trying to continually improve... -
Ivana Tough 4/05/2024 10:12 AMWOAH did this first 5 days ever go by quickly!-
Melissa Tomecz 4/05/2024 2:57 PMShort week because of the Monday we had off. And weird, wonky weather! 3 weeks and 3 days left!
