Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Community and Connection
Keep My Community Clean
A clean community benefits everyone. Each day I am outside, I will pick up 5 pieces of litter to keep my community clean.
Community and Connection
Meet My Neighbors
Strong neighborhoods are built on connection and trust. I will introduce myself to 1 neighbors or spend time getting to know people in my community.
Sustainable Innovation
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Empowering the Next Generation
Host a Bio-blitz
A bio-blitz helps youth engage with local biodiversity. I will organize or participate in a bio-blitz with young people to identify and document the plants, animals, and insects in our area.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Community and Connection
Become a Sustainability Aficionado or Invite a Colleague!
Become a Sustainability Aficionado or invite one of your colleagues to join if you're already tuned into the program.
Community and Connection
Join your local Green Team or participate in an Earth Month activity organized by them
Get involved! Join your local Green Team to connect and work on local sustainability initiatives. Or, participate in one of the many Earth Month activities they've organized.
Land, Water, and Air
Begin a meeting with a “Sustainability Moment”
Kick off your meetings with a "Sustainability Moment" to keep environmental awareness top of mind. Even better, develop new "Sustainability Moments" tailored to your specific location and work, making the connection between sustainability and your daily activities even stronger!
Sustainable Innovation
Take the Green Pill Trainings on Emerson Learn
Learn about sustainability by taking two Green Pill modules on Emerson Learn. Choose the topics that appeal to you most!
Health and Well-Being
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Sustainable Innovation
Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs
Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 1 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?
Vaibhav Thakur 4/30/2025 7:26 AMA dripping tap or a running toilet can waste gallons of water. Regularly checking for and promptly fixing any leaks is crucial. -

By calculating the amount of "water" saved with each minute reduced, the impact becomes tangible. For example, if an average shower uses around 10 litres of water per minute, cutting a 10-minute shower to 5 minutes would "save" 50 litres. Seeing this number accumulate over days and weeks would create a strong sense of how much water is typically used and how much can be conserved through a simple change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

Contributing to the cleanliness of our neighborhood can foster a sense of pride and connection. Knowing that we are making a tangible difference, however small, can make us feel more invested in the community's appearance and well-being. This can translate to a stronger emotional attachment to the place we live. -

I joined the EcoChallenge because I believe small actions can make a big difference. I care about protecting the environment and wanted to learn more about how I can help in everyday life. Through this challenge, I’ve realized that even simple steps, like learning about renewable energy or supporting local biodiversity, can inspire real change. I hope to keep building better habits and encouraging others around me to take small steps too—for a healthier planet and future generations. -

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE: - A catchy mantra that's easy to remember and impactful in practice. First, focus on reducing waste by choosing items that last, like reusable shopping bags or metal water bottles instead of their disposable counterparts.Reusing items might require a dash of creativity, but thinking outside the box can lead to new and inventive purposes for everyday objects. The conventional practice of recycling also plays a significant role here.
Be sure to familiarize yourself with your local recycling guidelines so you know what can go where. Often, materials like paper, glass, plastic, and metals have separate streams, ensuring they can be transformed into new, useful items.
Instead of tossing things away, consider upcycling — it’s not only beneficial to the planet but can also be a fun DIY project.
