Jody's actions
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
Create & Share A Love Letter, Poem, Song or Picture
SDG 14, 15
I will express my love and gratitude for our planet by writing a love letter, poem, song or taking a picture. I will share this in the Ecochallenge feed or on my social media.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 2 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 20 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 20 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG 11
Through my Earth Month Ecochallenge feed, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jody Tanori 10/13/2023 9:55 AMWhy did I join? Why not? It's my planet as well as it is anybody else's. Let's all take responsibility for our actions. Together we can make a difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Ecological & Xeriscape GardeningWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
-
Jody Tanori 4/28/2023 5:03 PMThis whole spring & summer I'll be focusing on creating more eco- friendly areas of my gardens and yard. During lunch today I planted 4 different native ferns in my island. Who knew there were so many varieties of ferns! I also planted a Bleeding Heart plant to attract more bees & butterflies.

Jody Tanori 4/27/2023 3:45 PMI've been doing so much research on natural ways to deal with garden pests. I had always heard that used coffee grounds were good for gardening but never knew why until now. Did you know that used coffee grounds add nutrients as well as kill slugs? I stopped into a Starbucks the other day and picked up their used coffee grounds for the day to add to my garden immediately.
I also found that Hydrogen Peroxide kills a variety of pests in all life stages, kills soil fungus, root rot and is great for disinfecting your garden tools and pots. You can even soak your seeds in hydrogen peroxide for an extra boost to get them off to a stronger start. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Analyze Your Utility BillsWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Jody Tanori 4/26/2023 4:57 PMI always assumed that my power bill was based on time of day usage. It's actually a tiered billing. I called PSE to see if there are options on how I'm billed. There are not at this time, but they are looking into it. The gentleman I spoke with did also suggest options & resources to help me reduce my power consumption. -
Jody Tanori 4/24/2023 10:17 AMSince this challenge started I am so much more aware of my water consumption. Now, if I need to run the kitchen faucet for a minute or two while it gets hot, I fill a pitcher with the running water. If I don't use that water right away (for the coffee maker), I'll take it out to one of my watering cans to water the plants when ready. It's amazing how much water accumulates just waiting for the tap to heat up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Jody Tanori 4/24/2023 10:09 AMI took a friend to the local nursery and we looked at local pollinator friendly plants. I purchased several and will return next month for more. I'm hoping to attract more bees and hummingbirds. Can't wait to see the results! Not only are they fascinating to observe, but so beneficial to our environment and the crops we rely on for food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Host or Join a Cleanup EventHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Jody Tanori 4/22/2023 6:14 PMThe Heritage Park cleanup was a group effort & success. When we band together as a group, not only does the job get done faster, but it also bonds people together, creating a more positive experience & more appreciation for the work put into the project.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Make Cleaning ProductsWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Jody Tanori 4/20/2023 9:16 AMWhile researching how to make my own cleaning products, I came across the article, " How to Avoid Buying Pet Products with Toxic Chemicals". I am amazed at the number of & kinds of toxic ingredients that make up dog toys! I had no idea! I will do better to be sure I'm not introducing these chemicals to my pets. -
