Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Mariah Sullivan 4/22/2024 8:08 PMI choose my challenges carefully because I really wanted to see how many plastic water bottles I wasn’t using by using my Stanley cup! It really makes a huge difference if you’re a big water drinker. I used to use a lot of water bottles before I switched to reusable and I can see my impact so much clearer.-

Mariah Sullivan 4/22/2024 8:02 PMHappy earth day!! Every earth day I like to reflect about the planet and how beautiful it is! -
Mariah Sullivan 4/15/2024 12:35 PMI’ve been sick the last few days and my wants vs needs have really come into play stay at home and resting. While it’s super tempting to order out for every meal while I don’t feel well, I’ve been trying to cook at home with what I have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Mariah Sullivan 4/08/2024 4:01 PMThere are alot of toxic and harmful chemicals in cleaning products. Not just harmful to the planet but also people and our pets. In order to keep myself and my cat safe, I have switched to simple organic ingredients that are safe to go into our water system and safe for me and my cat. I haven’t tried making my own cleaning products but I would like to in the future or I would like to invest in those tablets that I can add water to.-
Michelle Gilevich 4/08/2024 4:20 PMDr. Bronner's castille soap is an easy start - I use it for hand soap, disinfectant, and for my mop! Also recommend cleaning concentrates (you can find at Target) or shopping on Thrive market (although you need a yearly subscription)!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Mariah Sullivan 4/08/2024 3:59 PMI use reusable water bottle daily and I refill my 30z at least 5 times a day. The average plastic water bottle is about 8oz. This made me realize I am saving about 19 plastic bottles from being used. The amount of plastic we consume every day is alarming. Something as simple as drinking water can be so impactful.-
Michelle Gilevich 4/08/2024 4:22 PMSome of my friends and their families are always using plastic bottles, even in their homes :(

Mariah Sullivan 4/08/2024 11:00 AMConservation is going great! I’m learning a lot about myself an my community. This challenge really makes you think -
Mariah Sullivan 4/06/2024 10:24 PMI had the choice between plastic cutlery and compostable cutlery while out of town. I chose compostable cutlery instead!-
Anu dheebha 4/06/2024 10:32 PMGreat! By this you are going to avoid one time plastic or plastic and set a new example to life time usuage of things

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Mariah Sullivan 4/05/2024 6:21 PMWhile snacking. Very rarely are snacks in sustainable packaging. I would like to switch to getting snacks from bulk bins and refilling the same container instead of buying many little packages.-
Bre McCormick 4/08/2024 9:50 AMSnacks have SO much packaging it's insane! I have started to switch many of my favorite snacks to options in the bulk bins or make at home versions that allow me to use less packaging in general.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Mariah Sullivan 4/05/2024 6:19 PMBy walking more I get to engage with my community and learn more about what’s and who’s around me. I enjoy biking or walking in the sun vs driving. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Mariah Sullivan 4/05/2024 6:17 PMI have a lot of wants that feel like needs, like food to go in plastic or styrofoam but I can cook food I have at home. I’ve learned that I eat out frequently and do not really need to. That also will help me change my eating habits to healthier options.
