Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

On Sundays I volunteer at my local zoo and I have the honor of working and learning about Safari animals. Yesterday, I learned how to pull the eggs from the cranes. The zoo keepers do this because in Arizona we have snakes and since the animals are outside and eggs are an easy target, they pull them and incubate them to keep them safe. I had mixed feelings because the mother was protective, but at the same time it is the safest option for the egg to survive. The African Crown Cranes are an endangered species, and protecting them at all costs is important, however it is still hard because the mother bird doesn't understand. There will always be hard parts to doing good things when it comes to animal conservation. I wish more people around the world were exposed and educated on animals and habitats. For now, my best thing I can do is volunteer and help where I can.

Thank you @terencemcbride and @michelleryan I love it, I get to work with Rhinos, Giraffes, Bongos (less than 200 left in the wild) and it feels good to be a part of programs that help save these species.

Hello Super Green Team and Folks!

Today at the CrossFit gym I am a part of we held an event for my best friend, Kat who lost one of her kidneys. We put on a fundraiser with the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona and had a raffle, our WOD (workout of the day) was one that Kat picked out for the gym and we had orange t-shirts (Kidney Foundation Color) and the CrossFit Community came together and today we raised over $700.00! We are adding that to the $950 dollars we have already made! Outside of the medical community we are the top group raising money so for the foundation! Our group name is Are you Kidney me? :)

It was an amazing effort and it was fantastic to see the gym community come together, and of course, if was nice to be a part of something bigger than myself. Donating time and effort is the best thing I feel I can support my friend with.

Have an awesome weekend folks and stay green!

I have a friend who lost a kidney last year and two more that are looking at potential kidney surgeries in the coming months. This is so scary - why is it suddenly a thing? Has it always been? Stay safe out there, friends, and protect those organs!

I shared this true story to my daughter's honor society course.

When my great grandmother was alive, her education took her to the 8th grade. After that society told her it was her duty to work at the family home and prepare to find a husband to take care of her.
Though she was a brilliant writer, wore pants in the early 1900's, and fought for women's rights, her life was restricted to what she could do. I mainly spoke about laws and how when she was a child, women were not allowed to vote.
The next Generation was my grandmother, who did graduate high school. She was married young and had my mother and my uncle and was mainly a stay at home wife until she sound out that my grandfather had an entire other family! She divorced, and at that time it was frowned upon, and she lacked the skills for many jobs that she could get as a woman. She had a good life regardless, and was okay off.
My mother also graduated high school, she attended a few community college course but did not pursue anything. She too was a stay at home mother and wife and after 16 years of marriage her and my father divorced. She also faced the same hardships as my grandmother.
Seeing this pattern, I was and still am determined to end the cycle of not only poverty, but to have a career where there is stability and I can take care of myself and do not have to depend on a man or anyone else.
Fast forward to two years ago, I went back to college, graduate with a 3.8 GPA and became the first woman in my family to ever graduate from a community college. I never gave up, I worked full time, was raising my daughter alone, and I went to school part time to three quarters of the time.
Now I am taking online courses at Arizona State University and am on my way to achieve my Bachelor's Degree!
Never give up! Cycles are meant to be broken, and change what no longer serves a purpose in life!

While I was driving today I noticed the smell of neroli, one of my favorite scents. There are often times in older neighborhoods in Phoenix, citrus trees and it is the spring and oranges, lemons, and grapefruit trees are starting to bloom. I felt grateful. That scent reminds me of good things. Participating in this eco-challenge, as a first timer, is not only helping me see what we all do on the daily, but also what we can accomplish. I am proud of every team and every individual that is taking the time to contribute positivity to ourselves, to others, and communities. Because with those, there is a positive impact on the environment around us. :) Stay amazing folks!

I checked in with my old friend from High School. We have been friends since the 11th grade and keep in touch. I texted her and told her I was thinking about her and that I hope she is doing well. She called me right away and told me that she got a promotion and things for her are looking up! She told me she was grateful that I called because she was having an off day. Its the little things that are so important!

What did you learn about your water footprint, and what changes felt most practical or surprising? How does this connect to resilience on a larger scale?

I learned that a single person needs at least one gallon of water for daily, minimal survival. It made me think about how much water we waste in the global north compared to those that have to walk to a community watering hole to get the basics. I do my best to keep using reusable water bottles and minimize the length of time I shower. I also watched a documentary about the poison water in Flint, Michigan. I think the most surprising part of learning about this is that there are millions of people surviving on 1 gallon a day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    What is resilience?
What personal strengths or supports helped you adapt to a past challenge? How might those same strengths help you in the future?

My past challenge was one of the most difficult times of my life. My ability to adapt and never give up is what saved me. My strengths were having the ability to multitask, ask for help, not be afraid, get up, keep doing and going. I used those to adapt and do the best I could everyday. I never gave up.

I spent time volunteering at the local zoo, here in Arizona. The pygmy hippo and one of our giraffes had their babies! I hepled clean up the giraffe barn and rhino barn and then went with the zookeeper to feed the animals on our east route. It was amazing!

I spoke to a friend and my Uncle and expressed gratitude to both. I also helped my daughter's friend get to school and back. Both of these made me feel good because I helped someone, but also gave thanks to people that deserved it and needed to hear what I said.
