That's awesome, Alyssa! One of the best places to find enviro-friendly cleaning instructions is a Depression-Era book on keeping house. It is amazing how much knowledge we have lost even in the span of 100 years.

Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Conduct a Home Energy Audit
Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.
Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 10 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 10 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 10 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Wildlife
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.
Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 1 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 10 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 3 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?
Alyssa Steblay 4/14/2025 6:22 AMI often use baking soda and vinegar when cleaning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat is one way you can reduce your impact on nature the next time you spend time outdoors, and how might that action help preserve the environment for others?
Alyssa Steblay 4/08/2025 7:25 AMNot only should we utilize the seven principles, we should also understand trail etiquette. I know when we go hiking after poor weather and you want to step around the mudhole, but all we are doing is destroying the vegetation around that area. Making the mud hole bigger.

Exactly! There was a trail around my old neighborhood that just got wider and wider every year, eating away at the natural vegetation from people trying to walk around the mud.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?
Alyssa Steblay 4/04/2025 6:45 AMI never use the pre-rinse when I wash dishes to begin with. I pre-rinse my dish before putting it in the dishwasher. Since we do not run it daily, the dishes need to be rinsed so they do not smell over time.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!
Alyssa Steblay 4/02/2025 11:02 AMNow that a have a few different plants going, I love being able to grow new plants from cuttings. And even better, is that the plants that I do have also came from cuttings from my mothers house plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you observe or experience while spending time outside, and how did it affect you? How does connecting with nature enhance your physical and mental well-being?
Alyssa Steblay 4/02/2025 10:59 AMI am fortunate to live just a few blocks from trails and parks. It is so nice to be able to go to a green space (or brown space depending on the time of year). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Alyssa Steblay 4/02/2025 10:56 AMDuring my travels to Hawaii, I learned about reef friendly sunscreen. Which lead me to taking to learn more about different products and the ingredients within them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainable product did you purchase, and how does it align with your values?
Alyssa Steblay 4/01/2025 6:59 AMI use reusable grocery shopping bags, travel mugs and travel water bottles to fill up when traveling.
Bringing a reusable water bottle when traveling is the best, plus you can save money by not having to buy plastic water bottles all the time. You can always find a water fountain or even ask where you are to fill your water bottle for you with tap water :D-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeAre you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?
Alyssa Steblay 4/01/2025 6:56 AMI like leafy green house plants. I have attempted to get some outdoor plants to grow, but I have struggled to find plants that withstand the conditions of N. Texas and the types of light that hit each area around our home.
I did plant a lemon and orange tree last fall, that have thankfully survived over the winter :D So fingers crossed they will survive the first summer.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Alyssa Steblay 4/01/2025 6:50 AMI emit the most carbon related to my travel. It is a difficult item to reduce. As my husband and I live about a 3/3.5 hr flight from where our parents reside. To see family, we take a flight home.
Additionally, we love traveling and seeing new places. Not having a lot of vacation, we fly to reduce travel time. Not a lot of alternative travel methods that are convenient or time effective.-

Travel is a hard one for my family too. Awareness is a great starting point but that doesn't mean you have to make any changes. I'm not sure if all airlines do this but I know on Southwest I can see the carbon anticipated for the trip. It may not alter my decisions but it is an interesting stat to look out.
