Manny's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Manny Sottile 4/27/2024 7:15 PMI was surprised to see i can still save water, despite how much we have already reduced our water consumptions. Getting the kids to do it ALL the time is gonna be tricky. But already they are getting used to not keeping the water running while brushing their teeth. Aerator swap is also a big factor. Rather than the standard 30%, now we have 60% less water consumptions at sinks where hands are washed consistently. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Manny Sottile 4/27/2024 7:12 PMI use about the same oil i thought we did. Found a few contacts that deal with oil pickups at restaurants. Finding out what containers are best for storing and transporting and can drop it off at their site. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Manny Sottile 4/27/2024 7:05 PMI would say the biggest impact was the amount of people who saw us doing it. People who are used to seeing me and the kids have fun playing with toys outside and riding bikes and scooters. Then to see us cleaning up the community with all the garbage that has blown everywhere was a big eye opener for them. By the time we made it half way around the community, we gained about 10 other people who was more than happy to join us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Manny Sottile 4/05/2024 10:54 PMWe consume way more plastic than i thought. I will reuse bottles instead of continuously buying up to 3 new ones a day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Manny Sottile 4/05/2024 10:46 PMStarting with how/in what, things are cooked, can help eliminate burnt left over material on pots and pans, thus eliminating the waste of water for scrubbing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Manny Sottile 4/05/2024 10:44 PMstraws will be substituted by sippy cups/water bottles for the kids
