Action Track: Community
Pick Up the Phone
I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 2 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 15 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 8 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Cody Snipes 4/24/2024 12:32 PMComing form California this was pretty easy as non-reusable bags there cost 10c so I started this habit before moving to Vegas and have kept up with it since. Shout out to IKEA they have HUGE bags that are great for hauling groceries and other large items :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Cody Snipes 4/20/2024 9:26 AMIm terrible at packing my lunch in reusable containers.... :( I have a fondness for Ziplocs that I need to move past so thats where I want to lean in most. Substituting them for reusable glass or plastic containers that wont get thrown away after 1 use.-
Catherine Alexander 4/21/2024 8:03 AMAnother great thing to know about reusable glass/plastic containers...your food will not get smashed! It really is the way to go! Great job Cody!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Cody Snipes 4/16/2024 10:16 AMDid you know that only 9% of plastic produced worldwide is actually recycled? If you cut out just one non-reusable water bottle a day you're keeping an additional 730 lbs of plastic out of trash landfills every 5 years! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Cody Snipes 4/15/2024 3:25 PMI have started training for a half marathon again recently and never knew how many parks and little community areas my neighborhood has until I got out of my normal routine of driving everywhere and started running/walking to places near me! :)-
Catherine Alexander 4/16/2024 7:49 AMI love this! Great job!!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Cody Snipes 4/15/2024 3:19 PMHard to say if there is one specific area I feel called to work on, In my younger days in boy scouts we practiced leave no trace a lot and I think what always stood out to me was leave what you find. Super hard to not bring some sort of neat collectable or item home on a hike but leaving it allows others to enjoy it too, and prevents disruption of the mini eco system there-
Catherine Alexander 4/16/2024 7:51 AMGood perspective. I do like the "leave no trace" practice...and it's definitely difficult to not take home any souvenirs from travels that you've enjoyed.
