Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 15 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Lauren Smith 4/23/2024 12:21 PMI've found vinegar to work pretty well at cleaning hard water marks off of shower doors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Lauren Smith 4/11/2024 8:37 AMI learned that mangrove forests are often cut down to create shrimp farms, resulting in the release of huge amounts of stored carbon. While I do not eat shrimp often, I do enjoy it, but I will be mindful to choose fish that have a lower impact, or plant-based proteins like legumes instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Lauren Smith 4/10/2024 11:26 AMI loaned a steamer to a family member to use instead of buying a new one. Changing behavior to advance the shared economy is a great way to reduce one's consumption and associated impacts (e.g. resource conservation, carbon footprint reduction, etc.), expand the usage of an item, and open different ways to connect with friends, family and neighbors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Lauren Smith 4/10/2024 11:19 AMI explored a new area of the Uintas on skis with friends and my dog. It was great to get outside to enjoy the snow and sunshine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Lauren Smith 4/08/2024 9:51 AMBrown trout, small & large mouth bass appear to have the most advisories in Utah.

Looking more globally, I found it interesting that "only 66 percent of wild marine fish stock are considered to exist at biologically sustainable levels."

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Endangered SpeciesWhat endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?
Lauren Smith 4/04/2024 8:15 AMI was surprised to learn that the saola, a rare relative of wild cattle and buffalo that lives in Laos and Vietnam was just discovered in 1992. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native SpeciesWhat did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?
Lauren Smith 4/01/2024 7:24 PMAspens can photosynthesize through their bark, allowing them to continue to grow during the winter.
