Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day.

My passion for Earth Day started when I was in elementary school, before curbside recycling even existed, and has come full circle as I now get to engage my 4th grade daughter in (hopefully) making better choices. Earth Day & Arbor Day events have always inspired me this time of year to think green, and I try to commit to these lifestyle choices year-round. In elementary and middle school, I started bringing paper to school to be recycled through their trash program, before paper was included in the curbside program at my house. As a high school student, I spray painted messages around storm drains in my community to alert people of the risk of dumping contaminants that could pollute our streams & lakes. Now as an adult I help coordinate a Zero Waste program at my local elementary school, which includes composting of discarded lunch remnants and select paper products. Encouraging parents and children alike to make conscious decisions about the waste they produce is quite gratifying, and every bit counts. Its come full-circle for me!

I feel fortunate to live where resources exist and that public lands, parks, and our waterways are important to those that lead and govern our community and those that live in it. My city has an organized compost program which is picked up along with regular trash/recycling in its own bin, has recently started joined the Hefty Renew program (Hefty Renew) a new orange bag program that allows for recycling of plastic wrappers, bags, Styrofoam and other items typically left for the landfill. While it takes effort to live mindfully, I find it gratifying even if the hardest part is getting those closest to me to participate as well.

But why am I writing to you? I want you to sign up and participate in this event, and hopefully inspire others to do so, too. I enjoy participating in the Eco-Challenge event as it allows the flexibility to sign up for as little or as many activities to help make my small slice of the world a better place. There are great suggested actions to take, but also endless opportunity to add creative and personal goals for yourself, and the flexibility to accomplish those items throughout the month. The biggest hurdle for me is to log it so you get the credit for participating and to help Walgreens as a team perform well, as well as tracking points for being a better human. I am that person digging unrecyclable items out of the recycle bin (or vice versa) … if you see me digging in the trash in the office I might actually be trying to secure my points for that day! 🌎♻️💚
