If you have any empty gallon containers, fill them with water and keep one by your sink. If the power ever goes out, you can use this water for washing hands, flushing the toilet, and more if needed. Keep one gallon in the kitchen if needed for cooking. Having water is always useful just in case.

This is a great suggestion. I keep my water in my empty canning jars as they are emptied, until they are needed again for this purpose.

How do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?

    Ellie Simmons 3006's avatar
    Ellie Simmons 3006 4/04/2025 8:08 AM
In my area, bats are endangered. If I work to help pollinators, I help the flowers, I help the bugs and insect life, and then eventually I help the bats. The whole ecosystem relies on pollination.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

When I go hiking, I make sure unwrap my food first, and keep it all within one reusable container in my backpack. This makes things easier so I don’t have to unwrap everything, and I also reduce the chance of trash being left behind.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
Who is most affected by environmental degration or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected? What actions can you take to support those affected by these issues?

With global warming, Maine is seeing a lot of its lobsters migrate north! Working to help local lobstermen and fisheries can help support the community as their jobs will likely change within the next years! I’m making sure to support ethical fisheries and fishing practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Ellie Simmons 3006's avatar
    Ellie Simmons 3006 4/04/2025 8:02 AM
I didn’t realize how much plastic spatulas and cooking tools basically imbed your food with microplastics. I switched to wooden tools!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
What product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?

I replaced my shampoo and conditioner bottles with hand held shampoo bars and a conditioner bar. These help reduce plastic waste and take up less space!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
What new information did you learn about the weather risks in your area, and how has it changed the way you think about emergency preparedness?

    Ellie Simmons 3006's avatar
    Ellie Simmons 3006 4/04/2025 7:58 AM
I didn’t realize that there is more to emergency preparedness than what meets the eye. It was so important for me to realize that it will all come down to the moment, yes you can be prepared, but you need to be able to act in the moment. Hopefully learning initiative and quick thinking will help.

I love the use of green roofs! Since Portland Maine city line has to be relatively low because of the nearby airport, there’s so many bare roof surfaces that could be redone as green areas! I think the roofs could be turned into park spaces and places for bees to pollinate. Our entire community and city could benefit from this! Sustainable action will influence our future by giving us one!

This was a tough one, I love sugar in my coffee. I have already been working on removing sugar from my coffee thankfully. The gradual process helps me. I didn’t realize how much I really liked/needed it! Now it’s just coffee and cream 🥲 I’m learning to like the taste more.
