Katie's actions
Work and Organizations
Recognize Someone’s Contribution
Recognition strengthens trust and connection. I will recognize 20 people in my organization for their contributions, showing appreciation that helps build resilience and morale.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Water
Clean Up Waterways Near You
Healthy waterways are essential for resilience. I will volunteer for 4 hours to clean or protect local rivers, lakes, wetlands, or coastal areas to support ecosystems and communities.
Soil and Food
Share or Donate Surplus Food
Sharing surplus food not only prevents waste but also strengthens social safety nets. I will donate or share 30 meals or food items through a food bank, community fridge, or with neighbors to support food security and resilience.
Action Track
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 2 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Soil and Food
Compost My Food Waste
Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
What is resilience?
Explore Resilience in Nature
Resilience is all around us in the natural world. I will spend 120 minutes outdoors looking for examples of resilience—such as plants regrowing, animals adapting, or seasonal cycles—and reflect on what they teach about thriving through change.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow did joining a group make you feel more connected or supported? Why do you think belonging to a group helps people face challenges more effectively?
Katie Shonk 4/29/2026 7:04 AMAs a working mom of 2 busy kids, joining a group gave me permission to take some time for myself because I didn't want to let down the team. Even better, I got to share the joy of belly dancing with some new friends this year who also needed a mental break and some laughs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWhat is resilience? What examples of resilience did you notice outdoors? How did spending time in nature shape your understanding of resilience?
Katie Shonk 4/29/2026 7:01 AMWe're hard on our surroundings, but nature has a way of evolving and persisting. -

Giving the animals something else to eat can help but,,, giving them a bit of a pepper shower will also keep most things away -
Katie Shonk 4/29/2026 7:05 AMPS if you know of a good natural way to get whatever-that-is to stop chewing on my roses, let me know. I'm an abysmal gardener. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat did you notice about how much of your food waste could be composted? How does composting change the way you see “waste”?
Katie Shonk 4/28/2026 10:35 AMI was surprised how much food waste can be diverted which also makes my trash can smell better, but it's a trade-off. Now I have a new mental load item maintaining a compost bin forever. I've been promised by coworkers that it's no biggie once you get the hang of it, so we'll see. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWork and OrganizationsHow did recognizing someone’s effort affect your relationship or team dynamic? How can appreciation strengthen trust and teamwork where you are?
Katie Shonk 4/24/2026 8:57 AMRecognition doesn't have to be huge gushing gestures, and it should be tailored to fit the recipient. I got that advice when I first became a supervisor of people way back, and it's spot on. Teams work better when individuals feel valued and seen for their contributions, and sometimes that is accomplished with a quick text and sometimes it's public recognition. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?
Katie Shonk 4/11/2026 6:13 AMA few years ago I joined ShimmyMob - global 1 day belly dance flash mob with a new dance each year to benefit a local domestic violence shelter. We add new folks every year. Last night I hosted practice. Between pizza and a few bottles of wine, we had the very best time. What a way to shake off the stress of the week with friends new and old.-

Katie Shonk 4/06/2026 5:21 PMSoccer season = lots of outside time watching sunsets and enjoying the outdoors. Would enjoy it a bit more without all the other sports parents, but maybe that's the resilience piece :)
