Action Track: Community
Post on Alliance Greenhouse about the Ecochallenge
Tell others what you like about the Ecochallenge, what you've learned, and more.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 10 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Participate in an Earth Day Event or Celebration
Ecochallenge is great to think more about personal choices, but sometimes it's fun to get together with others for new ideas.
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 15 hours in my community.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Climate + Air
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Katie Shonk 4/30/2024 8:36 AMI've been waiting for the local high school's FFA plant sale (this weekend!) to buy my tomato & squash plants and some other brightly colored flowers to go in the front yard. My daughter and I eat the cherry tomatoes straight off the vine in the summer like candy. So good!-
Pierre Bourgeade 4/30/2024 7:51 PMGreat Challange, Alliance is in 9th position, this is amazing! Congrats to the blue team in 93th position !!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Sustainability Lunch and LearnWho did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?
Katie Shonk 4/30/2024 8:31 AMWe did a Snack and Learn at a Girl Scout meeting with 8 2nd graders. The girls earned their Global Action award. I told them about purchasing a reusable cup on a recent trip to Disney and brought a stack of solo cups that I tossed at them for every cup that was saved. They were impressed with the huge pile of cups, and how something so small could have a big impact. Then they made posters about how they can help our world.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Katie Shonk 4/30/2024 8:16 AMVolunteering refills my cup. I love working with kids, and they can teach us so much. Sometimes the chaos makes me crazy, but when the lightbulb goes on and they share something with you, it's amazing. -
Katie Shonk 4/30/2024 7:46 AMI'm so proud of Alliance (and the Blue Team) this year. We nearly doubled participation from last year, and I'm excited to see the final impact of our organization. Great job team! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Katie Shonk 4/30/2024 4:32 AMOur library has an amazing "library of things" from outdoor games and cake pans to a nice telescope. It's wonderful for the things you just need occasionally without cluttering your house. -
Katie Shonk 4/24/2024 1:23 PMWhile working in the spare office today (our side is still waiting on post-tornado permanent roof), I realized how much of these small eco-friendly changes take pre-planning. Our office has accumulated a large recycle bin, dishtowels that we take turns taking home to wash, reusable cutlery, etc. None of those are readily-available on just the other side of our buildings, and I feel so wasteful using paper towels to dry dishes and strange carting all my recyclables home. Fingers crossed to be back on home turf next month! -
Katie Shonk 4/23/2024 10:42 AMVery excited to share the Girl Scout Tree Promise with my Brownies tonight. We're also building and painting bird houses to put in their favorite tree.
