Sabina's actions

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I hope we do another challenge like this, even if it is not Earth Month

I went to a plant swap this Sunday, and not only did I get to bring plants that I would have otherwise composted but I was also able to bring home a few bushes and a tree to plant. I planted raspberry and blackberry bushes in my backyard and in the years to come I can have fresh berries to enjoy. Planting in my yard has really made my space a reflection of me between the flowers to come, and vegetables and fruit in my garden.

This past Sunday we held a plant swap by the Ferry Landing, it was a great community event. I was getting my garden area ready so I brought over some strawberry plants as well as mint to give and I came home with some flower plants for myself. I also brought my daughter and she learned ab it about plants and we both thought it was a great community event.

This past weekend I repurposed a container I have and gave it to my neighbor. She is going to use it to collect her food scraps and in turn she will add to my composting efforts. This small action will now save pounds of food waste from going to our landfill. It also formed a connection within my community with an individual who also would like to become more sustainable :)

What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

If I did not use reusable water bottles I would be throwing away at least 5 bottles a day just by myself......That is over 30 bottles a week. I love that i can make a difference, even it is small.

Now that the weather has been sunny, I plan on enjoying the outdoors daily for at least 20 to 30 minutes on my lunch break. I can't wait to get back into nature, especially because I work near a nature reserve with a Roaring Brook.

New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I have been composting for the past few years in my backyard. I will use the black gold as rich soil for my summer garden.
