Christina's actions

What is resilience?

Learn About Ordinary Magic

Resilience is an everyday magic in all of us. I will spend 5 minutes learning about resilience and psychologist Ann Masten’s concept of “ordinary magic,” which shows how people adapt and thrive through small, daily strengths.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 5 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Take Part in a Community Beautification Project

Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Reduce Light Pollution

Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Leave the Leaves

Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Participate in a Habitat Restoration Project

Healthy habitats support resilient wildlife populations. I will join 1 restoration efforts, such as planting native plants, cleaning a natural area, or repairing trails to protect biodiversity.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Choose Native Plants

Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Work and Organizations

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Speak Up for Wildlife Protection

Wildlife needs support from people. I will take 1 actions, such as volunteering, signing petitions, contacting leaders, or sharing information on social media, to help protect habitats and species.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Share a Definition of Resilience

Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 1 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Share a Resilience Story

Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 1 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Create My Own Water Action

Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Work and Organizations

Recognize Someone’s Contribution

Recognition strengthens trust and connection. I will recognize 1 people in my organization for their contributions, showing appreciation that helps build resilience and morale.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Get Outside!

Fresh air, (hopefully) sunshine, and movement should be a staple part of every day. Spend at least 10 (consecutive and intentional) minutes outside. Step outside for a walk, run, or bike ride. Not feeling active today? Try some breath work, take off your shoes and stand on the ground (grounding/earthing), sit on your porch with a good book or your morning coffee, or just connect visually with the world around you while you reset. No screens. Just you and the great outdoors.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Work and Organizations

Celebrate Successes Together

Celebrating achievements helps teams endure challenges. I will celebrate group or individual successes in my organization to build morale and resilience.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Support Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses helps keep communities vibrant and resilient. I will look at my monthly spending to determine where I can make changes to choose to shop at local businesses or restaurants, with a focus on businesses owned by people of color, local farmers, or community members, instead of large corporations. I will put at least 3 of those changes into action.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Yay Compost!

Research compost options in your area or start your own compost bin at home. Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. Composting food scraps at home, work, or in my community, avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 3 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Soil and Food
What did you decide to grow, and how did it feel to start (or care for) your plants? What connections did it give you to soil or food resilience?

I LOVE to grow my own food. Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies. Nurturing a seed into a beautiful thriving plant that produces food for my family to eat is so rewarding. I usually end up with too much so this year some friends and I planned our gardens together so that we could share the harvest and didn't have everyone growing the same things. I always layer local compost in the soil and my plants LOVE it! My son also loves to "help" and really enjoys checking in on the plants and picking cherry tomatoes when they are ripe.

Growing food is definitely I something I need to get into. I plant flowers in the garden, but I would like to start planting fruits and vegetables because it would teach me how to be more self-sufficient.

How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

This is the hardest one for me. We have a lot of handwash and I don't like to put dishes in the sink after they're washed but before they're rinsed. It doesn't feel "clean" enough for me so I put a clean bowl in the sink to hold the washed items ahead of rinsing. It works ok but then I have a bowl out all the time which I don't like. I really want to be mindful of water use but this will be a hard habit to reform since I don't have a process I like yet. I've been doing better though!

I love fruits and veggies - raw, cooked, alone, in a big salad - I'm a fan of all of it! I need to set myself up for success though or the produce will sit and go bad. I wash and prep my produce every week that way it is grab and go. One more month until the farmers market starts and I can start getting fresh, local produce - the BEST!

Last year I planted a heritage apple tree in my front yard. A local group was giving some away as part of an effort to restore some of the apple trees that were originally on this land when it was first settled. This year I have arranged for it to have a friend. I contacted the same group and asked for whatever fruit-bearing native or heritage tree they wanted a home for. Excited to see what I get! I won't have it until early May though so a little late for a pic.

One of the reasons I moved to the area I live in now was to enjoy the night sky. The community I live in is very small but rapidly expanding which could compromise my beautiful night sky views if the wrong lights are installed. Another challenge is that a good number of the folks who own homes here have them as 2nd homes. Most of them have lights on in the home or outside to deter break-ins or whatever they think it deters. Since the HOA is by block there is no larger way to control this. I'm planning to bring some ideas shared in the learning to our next community town hall - we already require downward facing lights as part of code but adding the color requirement and adding something that could prevent bright floodlights on all night on homes and carry the light temp/color requirement to homes and not just street lights would be a big win.

It's very dry here in the high desert so rain is always a treat. Today was extra lovely - a light drizzle with a little thunder way out in the distance. The perfect setting for a long walk taking in the smell of the rain in the mountains.

Happy Earth Day Ecochallengers!! How did you celebrate the best holiday of the year today?

I usually get out in the afternoon for a trash clean-up in my neighborhood. Efforts were a bit futile today so I'm going to try again tomorrow. It is extremely windy here today and the trash is moving faster than I can plus a LOT of dust/dirt from the nearby construction is blowing around.

Instead I decided to focus on communication and reached out to some people I know that don't share my exact environmental views. Understanding multiple POV's (specifically around topics I feel very strongly about) is a goal of mine this year. I figured this was a good day to expand my horizons and maybe expand some other people's too. What I confirmed is that we agree on a lot more than it feels like and conversations that stem from a place of genuine curiosity and respect are almost always welcomed and appreciated.

I hope you all were able to do something to enjoy and celebrate the day. I look forward to getting out there tomorrow to see what the wind blew in and capture it before it can blow into the nearby pastures.

IMPORTANT DAILY ACTIVITY POINTS MESSAGE! Hi Team! For one of your daily actions you are asked recognize someone for their contributions. I understand that the tile says "in your organization" which is still the rule on in office days but what about weekends, or vacations, or other OOO needs? I say let's count others outside the organization for these daily points on out-of-office days. Feel free to go back and give yourself some points for the past weekend if you recognized someone even though they were not part of our company. Cheers to giving ALL the recognition!
