Noelle's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 45 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 120 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Noelle Schwartz 4/30/2024 11:25 AMWhen ordering on apps within the school's food systems, it is practically impossible to go without plastic cups, styrofoam containers and other single-use items like straws and paper bags. Carrying around reuseable options like utensils and straws can help to reduce the excess plastic from single-use options on campus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Noelle Schwartz 4/30/2024 11:22 AMThe most challenging part of committing to reduced consumption is my innate desire to spoil my cat. I have been trying to be more selective when choosing her toys and enrichment activities to find things that are reuseable, able to be modified, or made out of sturdy materials that I can get many uses out of. Though it has been increasingly difficult to stick with this action, I know that making these types of decisions helps me to grow my knowledge on personal changes that can be made to help fight climate change and slow detrimental effects of excessive trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Noelle Schwartz 4/29/2024 3:38 PMI was able to sew multiple native floral perennials like purple cone flowers, black-eyed-susans, and bee balms. My goal is to grow them into small plants to then give to my family members before I leave for my jobs after graduation! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Noelle Schwartz 4/29/2024 3:31 PMEating more meat creates a higher carbon footprint and often supports the commercial farming industry, which produces methane (an even more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide). Methane changes the climate quicker, and unfortunately the impacts of climate change affect not only human, but all ecosystem function. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Noelle Schwartz 4/29/2024 3:20 PMI have always been drawn to helping people and animals in harmony to find peace between their differences -I think this is why I love Environmental Planning and Sustainable Development so much! It draws on helping all beings to live in reciprocity with one another. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Noelle Schwartz 4/29/2024 3:16 PMI went to RB Winters for an early spring hike to see what mushrooms and plants had begun to 'wake up'. It is always a serene reset for me to have the privilege of taking a hike in a natural area near me.-
Sarah F 4/29/2024 3:50 PMI love going to the state park near me. I also loved walking to my favorite restaurant instead of driving.
