Danna's actions

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 300 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

We were regular visitors to State Parks in our area during covid. It was a great way to get out for exercise & explore new places. We have started to do that again. It's great to see the natural diversity of the parks around us.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

We live in a rural area where we all drive our trash to the local dump & recycling area for consolidation & removal. We find alot of trash along our property line. We try to pick-up at least once a week. As people see us doing that, they wave (approvingly). I hope this encourages everyone to do the same & be more cautious on their way to the recycling center.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

I've been finding many re-use options for the bottles of water that we have already used. Indoor plant watering. Fuel on the go for the chain-saw, lining the bottom of large outdoor planting pots to add drainage & conserve soil. Now, we are focused on not using them. We are trying to use our reusable bottles. We fill them in the evening so that they are cold & ready in the morning to just grab & go.

We live in a small rural community in Wisconsin & are trying to reduce our trips to our preferred grocery store. This week, we are planning our menu strictly around what do we already have in the freezer, fridge & pantry. No shopping this week. That not only saves on fuel, but also makes sure that we use up our existing resources to make sure nothing goes bad or gets freezer burn.

My husband and I own some wooded acreage, and ended up cutting down thousands of Ash trees due to the Emerald Ash Borer that infested our area this last year. Over this last weekend, we planted roughly 300 white pine trees and 3800 tamarack trees to provide more biodiversity to the land.

We donated several items to a local non-profit organization called Beaver Creek Reserve. They will use them in a "Rummage Sale" for income. Anything not sold will go to Goodwill. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
