As part of Earth Month, I’ve been reflecting on how deeply grounding it can be to truly step into nature—even when it’s outside my comfort zone. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to spend two days at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, a Benedictine monastery in southern Indiana. During our retreat, we were encouraged not to stay sequestered indoors, but instead to take our reflection time outside and explore the grounds. While I’m usually very much an “indoor cat,” I took the opportunity to slow down, walk the paths, and simply be present in the fresh air and spring sunshine.
The weather was perfect, the scenery stunning, and the overall experience unexpectedly peaceful. Even though I arrived feeling stressed—about work, being away, and yes, missing my cat—there was a deep sense of calm that came from spending time in such a serene place. There’s something about the natural beauty and quiet energy of Saint Meinrad that creates space for clarity, rest, and inner peace. It was a powerful reminder that connecting with nature isn’t just good for the earth—it’s essential for our own well-being too. If you ever get a chance to visit, I highly encourage it. We all loved it.

I highly recommend a St Meinrad's retreat for anyone. Even if you aren't religious per se, I think there is something special about the atmosphere of devotion and introspection

How did exercising each day impact your physical and mental resilience? What activities helped you feel stronger, more flexible, or more capable of adapting?

Exercising each day has had a meaningful impact on both my physical and mental resilience. I recently started a consistent cycling routine at the encouragement of my healthcare providers, and while it felt challenging at first, it quickly became an important form of self‑care. Physically, I feel stronger and have noticeably more energy throughout the day. Mentally, the routine has helped regulate my mood, sharpen my focus, and reduce stress—I feel more patient, less reactive, and far less like a “grumpy T‑rex” than I did before.
Cycling, in particular, has helped me feel more capable and adaptable. It requires endurance, balance, and consistency, which has translated into greater confidence in my ability to push through discomfort and build strength over time. Establishing this habit has reminded me that resilience isn’t about pushing harder all the time, but about showing up regularly, listening to my body, and making space for practices that support long‑term well‑being.
