- 18-DAY STREAK
That sounds like an amazing experience! Visiting Zanzibar and Tanzania with your 4-year-old daughter must have been both enlightening and memorable. It's incredible how travel can teach us about the importance of clean water and the need to preserve it.

Sustainable Innovation
Learn about Sustainable Innovation
Innovation can create a more sustainable world. I will spend 30 minutes learning about new materials, technologies, ideas, or practices that help solve environmental challenges and improve our planet's future.
Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 30 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Land, Water, and Air
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Wildlife
Learn to Be a Responsible Pet Owner
Being a responsible pet owner means minimizing the impact pets have on wildlife by keeping them indoors, never setting them 'free' into nature, and supervising pets when they are outside to prevent them from hunting or disturbing wild animals. This also keeps our pets safe from harm. I will spend 30 minutes learning about ways to ensure my pet’s behavior and care practices protect local wildlife and their ecosystems.
Wildlife
Visit a nature and wildlife conservation area
Learn about endangered species and the actions that we can take to preserve them
Health and Well-Being
Recycle trash
Picked up a discarded aluminum can on a sidewalk and dropped it into a recycle can further up the street

Pierre Santoni 4/17/2025 3:28 PMWe recently visited the Serengeti National Park with our 4-year old daughter. It was an amazing experience about how endangered some of the most iconic animals are. Cheetahs and leopards in particular are becoming extremely rare. Less than 700 wild cheetahs and 300 leopards are left in an area of 30,000 square kilometers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat industries or sectors do you believe have the greatest potential to benefit from sustainable innovation, and how could they drive meaningful change? How do you think sustainable innovation will influence our future?
Pierre Santoni 4/17/2025 3:22 PMThe construction industry is ripe for disruptive innovation. Two examples. We use technology to enable faster, less time consuming, higher quality and digitally enabled site inspections. This reduces human and paper footprint, among other benefits. Another example: we also specify more sustainable ‘green’ concrete, when allowed by local specifications, and work actively to update those which do not allow it.
