John Andre's actions
Land + Forests
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 7 hours in my community.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

John Andre San Miguel 4/30/2024 3:33 AMAnd it's the last day.... how time flies but my heart is full. This month was extra special, and I am going to keep what I learned and practice moving forward. Thank you EchoChallenge 2024 :D -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
John Andre San Miguel 4/29/2024 4:38 AMI really have to prepare for the Zero Waste Day that it took me about two weeks to able to know what I should eliminate or should I find an alternative in my daily routine. I guess this is the harderst for me - preparation. During the day itself, the hardest was having no food waste as I find this action difficult due to the diet, I have so I planned my meals during the day and made it without any waste. I learned "Zero Waste" is the ideal condition much like many plant processes such as drying or cooling where one couldn't achieve 100% efficiency so in order to maximize the benefits of "zero waste" one must carefully plan their actions throughout the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
John Andre San Miguel 4/29/2024 4:28 AMWhat surprised me the most is the percentage of animals living - around 60% is livestock and less than 10% is wild while the rest are domesticated or pets. This is so sad that what used to be abundant is now threatened to extinction. -
John Andre San Miguel 4/29/2024 4:25 AMLast 2 days and I'm completing my one-time actions!-
LITTY PHILIP 4/29/2024 4:26 AMKeep it going! :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
John Andre San Miguel 4/29/2024 4:24 AMI joined the Water Filter Donation outreach program sponsored by Emerson last week in Tanay, Rizal, Philippines. I was able to help provide education on the importance of clean water. I am fortunate that my task involves getting to talk to the locals to share ideas and get to know their struggle in accessing clean water. It's fulfilling to be a part of this event as I see happy faces after we gave our donations.

John Andre San Miguel 4/28/2024 4:51 AMWe are at the last days of the Ecochallenge and I'm excited to end it on a high note and a promise that everything I started doing will go beyond this challenge. -
John Andre San Miguel 4/27/2024 4:34 AMI've been telling my family about the experience I had yesterday. It was really fun attending an donation drive and to advocate for clean water. I am happy I was able to closely interact with the local community as my task required me talk to them at most times -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
John Andre San Miguel 4/26/2024 6:10 AMLiving in an urban area, planting trees makes it possible to live with nature and see green around you. It somehow relaxes you mentally as it somehow makes you take a break from the hustle of life. Physically, trees also have their demands like having a pet, so you somehow move. Spiritually, they said that surrounding yourself with nature, makes you at peace. Overall, planting a tree is good for your health.-
Melissa Luedtke 4/26/2024 6:23 AMI agree!! It just makes you feel good about yourself and a feeling of good💚🌎

John Andre San Miguel 4/26/2024 2:05 AMToday, I joined an Emerson sponsored community event - Water Filter Donation. We went to a very remote place in Tanay, Rizal and got to help teach them the importance of having clean water and how our donation would help them get that need. I am thankful for this event as I realize how much I am blessed to have easy access to clean water and I was able to help a community get theirs.

Angela Mae Clarete 4/27/2024 6:29 AMThat would definitely help the people of Tanay. It’s so heartwarming to see such events. 💕 -
Ariel Manalo 4/26/2024 5:02 AMNice one! That's a great help for that community. Thanks Emerson! 💧💧💧

John Andre San Miguel 4/25/2024 2:26 AMWe are lucky that the Philippines is surrounded by different bodies of water being a archipelagic country. This means that our fish species is diverse, and we are able to locally sustain the demand. What needs to improve I guess is the technology to make fishing sustainable.
