Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Community and Connection
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about the Magic of Seaweed
Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 5 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 5 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 8 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about Sustainable Innovation
Innovation can create a more sustainable world. I will spend 5 minutes learning about new materials, technologies, ideas, or practices that help solve environmental challenges and improve our planet's future.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Learn about a Young Leader
Young people are making a big impact on the world. I will spend 5 minutes learning about a young leader working on environmental or social justice issues to get inspired and share their story on social media or the Ecochallenge feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Health and Well-Being
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 5 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 5 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 5 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 2 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

Last day! I hope the folks taking part in this challenge (myself included) can continue to build eco-friendly habits long after this is complete. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you learn about the sacred site’s history and significance? Why are these sites important to protect, support, and understand?
Harkiran Saluja 4/30/2025 11:09 AMJoshua Tree National Park has many sacred sites and archaeological areas that hold deep cultural significance for Native American tribes particularly the Cahuilla, Chemehuevi, and Serrano peoples who have lived in the region for thousands of years. These sites include ancient rock art, ceremonial locations, and artifacts that provide evidence of their long-standing connection to the land, traditional practices, and spiritual beliefs. Protecting these sacred sites is crucial not only for preserving Native American cultural heritage and allowing contemporary tribes to maintain their spiritual connections to ancestral lands, but also for helping us better understand human history and ensuring that future generations can learn from and appreciate these irreplaceable cultural resources. -

One daily action that I selected was to learn about a young leader, and it's been really amazing to see how young children took a problem their community faces and decided to do something about it. From plastic waste to raising awareness, young children have gone through great lengths to protect our environment and if they can take drastic measures, then we as adults can and should do our part as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Harkiran Saluja 4/29/2025 11:48 AM- Plant-Based Foodie 🥬
- 13-DAY STREAK
Pollinators like bees and birds are essential to producing many of the foods we eat on a regular basis, such as fruits and vegetables. Without them, our diets would be much more limited and food prices would be even higher. To help these pollinators thrive, we can plant native plants, avoid using pesticides, and support local beekeepers.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat industries or sectors do you believe have the greatest potential to benefit from sustainable innovation, and how could they drive meaningful change? How do you think sustainable innovation will influence our future?
Harkiran Saluja 4/28/2025 9:35 AM- Plant-Based Foodie 🥬
- 13-DAY STREAK
The energy and transportation industries have a lot of potential for sustainable innovation, as transitioning to renewable energy sources and eco-friendly transportation alternatives could really reduce global emissions. Additionally, the fashion industry has potential for sustainable innovation as well if it can widely implement the use of recycled and biodegradable materials and and have more clothing rental and resale initiatives. -

Today, I got some bar soap and a notebook made of recycled materials. I knew that using liquid body wash creates plastic waste and definitely wanted to reduce that, but I also recently learned that the many notebooks (including the ones I've I've been using for my daily writing) have plastic covers and synthetic spirals. They also tend to have chemically bleached paper to get the white color and slow the decaying process. Glad I'm making these changes! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?
Harkiran Saluja 4/27/2025 8:33 PM- Plant-Based Foodie 🥬
- 13-DAY STREAK
I'm replacing my liquid body wash for bar soap and also got a notebook made out of recycled materials to use for my daily writing. These are items that I use every day so replacing them will create less waste over time and I intend to replace other items around the house with more sustainable alternatives, such as laundry detergent and dishwasher pods.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did collecting rainwater influence your understanding of sustainable water use? What tasks or activities could benefit most from rainwater collection in your household?
Harkiran Saluja 4/26/2025 2:13 PM- Plant-Based Foodie 🥬
- 13-DAY STREAK
I'm currently collecting rainwater in a bucket, which I intend to use to water plants in my backyard. Sometimes, we get water from the outside tap to water the plants but collecting rainwater can prevent us from doing that and still accomplish the same task.-
