Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Learn about a Young Leader

Young people are making a big impact on the world. I will spend 5 minutes learning about a young leader working on environmental or social justice issues to get inspired and share their story on social media or the Ecochallenge feed.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Joshua Tree National Park has many sacred sites and archaeological areas that hold deep cultural significance for Native American tribes particularly the Cahuilla, Chemehuevi, and Serrano peoples who have lived in the region for thousands of years. These sites include ancient rock art, ceremonial locations, and artifacts that provide evidence of their long-standing connection to the land, traditional practices, and spiritual beliefs. Protecting these sacred sites is crucial not only for preserving Native American cultural heritage and allowing contemporary tribes to maintain their spiritual connections to ancestral lands, but also for helping us better understand human history and ensuring that future generations can learn from and appreciate these irreplaceable cultural resources.

One daily action that I selected was to learn about a young leader, and it's been really amazing to see how young children took a problem their community faces and decided to do something about it. From plastic waste to raising awareness, young children have gone through great lengths to protect our environment and if they can take drastic measures, then we as adults can and should do our part as well.

How do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?

Pollinators like bees and birds are essential to producing many of the foods we eat on a regular basis, such as fruits and vegetables. Without them, our diets would be much more limited and food prices would be even higher. To help these pollinators thrive, we can plant native plants, avoid using pesticides, and support local beekeepers.

The energy and transportation industries have a lot of potential for sustainable innovation, as transitioning to renewable energy sources and eco-friendly transportation alternatives could really reduce global emissions. Additionally, the fashion industry has potential for sustainable innovation as well if it can widely implement the use of recycled and biodegradable materials and and have more clothing rental and resale initiatives.

Today, I got some bar soap and a notebook made of recycled materials. I knew that using liquid body wash creates plastic waste and definitely wanted to reduce that, but I also recently learned that the many notebooks (including the ones I've I've been using for my daily writing) have plastic covers and synthetic spirals. They also tend to have chemically bleached paper to get the white color and slow the decaying process. Glad I'm making these changes!

I'm replacing my liquid body wash for bar soap and also got a notebook made out of recycled materials to use for my daily writing. These are items that I use every day so replacing them will create less waste over time and I intend to replace other items around the house with more sustainable alternatives, such as laundry detergent and dishwasher pods.

I'm currently collecting rainwater in a bucket, which I intend to use to water plants in my backyard. Sometimes, we get water from the outside tap to water the plants but collecting rainwater can prevent us from doing that and still accomplish the same task.
