Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Learn about the Magic of Seaweed

Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 5 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn How to Save the Bees

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 5 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 8 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

Sustainable Innovation

Learn about Sustainable Innovation

Innovation can create a more sustainable world. I will spend 5 minutes learning about new materials, technologies, ideas, or practices that help solve environmental challenges and improve our planet's future.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 10 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Learn about a Young Leader

Young people are making a big impact on the world. I will spend 5 minutes learning about a young leader working on environmental or social justice issues to get inspired and share their story on social media or the Ecochallenge feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials

Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.

UNCOMPLETED

Health and Well-Being

Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 5 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

Over halfway there and there's so much I've learned about seaweed and how it can fight climate change. Particularly, aspergosis seaweed can reduce methane emissions significantly if put in cows' food. I hope this can scale and we can reduce methane emissions by 50-90%, which would be a huge deal for the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

Most of my carbon emissions are from travel and consumption. One thing I can go to reduce emissions on the travel front is to ask for an electric vehicle when I book a taxi. When it comes to consumption, I can prioritize buying more locally grown food, reduce my use of plastic, and prioritize buying wooden and bamboo products.

I've spent the last week or so taking ~5 minute showers, which not only has saved gallons of water, but also has saved time in terms of getting ready in the morning. It's easy to get lost in the shower but I feel like lately I've been more disciplined about it and am trying not to waste water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I wasn't surprised to see that I have a much lower water footprint compared to the average. I've shortened my showers thanks to this challenge and try to save water in other areas when possible, such as when I'm brushing my teeth and washing dishes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What water justice issues did you learn about, and who is most affected in your community? How can you contribute to creating equitable access to clean water in your area?

The video from the UN stuck with me. It basically gave a bunch of statistics around the amount of people in the world that don't have clean water and said we're building spaceships and AI but we haven't really solved the world's basic problems. I feel like people who are homeless and in rural or underserved areas are less likely to have access to clean water and we should work with organizations to make sure we can expand this access.

This is such an important perspective issue. A lot of us with basic resources forget how many don't have them.

How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

While I incorporate several water-saving practices in my routine, such as turning off the tap while brushing or washing dishes and washing full loads, my showers were 15-20 minutes long. Shortening them to 5 minutes not only saves time, but also saves many gallons of water that adds up over time. I feel like I'm more aware of how much water I'm using and hope to continue this practice while adopting new ones, such as reusing water.

I didn't know how much of a powerhouse seaweed could be in combatting climate change. It doesn't have a lot of requirements when it comes to farming and absorbs carbon, which is good for the environment. It also has the potential to serve as fuel for transportation vehicles which could be really helpful in reducing emissions.
