Land, Water, and Air
Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods
Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 10 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Land, Water, and Air
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 30 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeAre you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?
KAMALESH S 4/14/2025 9:37 PMYes, I enjoy caring for house plants because they bring life and calmness to any space. Watching them grow gives a sense of satisfaction and connection to nature. However, I'm still learning and could improve my plant care skills by understanding more about each plant’s specific needs—like how much sunlight, water, or humidity they require. Getting better at identifying early signs of pests or overwatering would also help me take better care of them. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?
KAMALESH S 4/09/2025 1:50 AMShortening my showers made me more aware of how much water I was using without thinking about it before. By reducing my shower time, I realized how easy it is to waste water and how even small changes can make a big difference in conserving it.
Other water-saving practices I can adopt include:
1. Turning off the tap while brushing my teeth or washing dishes.
2. Fixing any leaks around the house to prevent water from being wasted.
3. Using a bucket to catch excess water while waiting for the shower to heat up, and using it for plants or cleaning.
4. Running the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads to maximize water efficiency.
5. Installing water-efficient fixtures like low-flow showerheads and faucets.
These simple actions can help reduce water usage and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat benefits do forests offer you personally? What certifications or labels will you look for when purchasing wood and paper products, and why?
KAMALESH S 4/09/2025 1:49 AMForests offer many personal benefits, such as providing clean air, regulating the climate, and supporting biodiversity. They also offer recreational spaces for hiking, relaxation, and enjoying nature, which contributes to mental and physical well-being. Personally, forests help me feel connected to nature and remind me of the importance of preserving our environment.
When purchasing wood and paper products, I will look for certifications or labels such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). These certifications ensure that the products come from sustainably managed forests that prioritize environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic viability. Choosing products with these labels helps support responsible forest management and contributes to protecting forests for future generations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?
KAMALESH S 4/09/2025 1:45 AMChanging my dishwashing habits has made me more mindful of water use. By washing dishes in a basin instead of under a running tap, I’ve cut down on water waste. It made me realize how easy it is to waste water without thinking.
Other small changes I can make to save water in my home include:
1. Taking shorter showers.
2. Fixing leaks to prevent water waste.
3. Using a broom instead of a hose to clean outside.
4. Washing full loads of laundry.
5. Using water-efficient appliances.
These simple actions can help save water and make a positive impact on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat did you learn about forest-friendly foods? What sustainable food choices will you commit to making, and why are they important to you?
KAMALESH S 4/09/2025 1:43 AMForest-friendly foods are those that are produced in ways that help protect forests and the biodiversity within them. These foods are often sourced through sustainable farming practices that avoid deforestation, protect ecosystems, and reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture. Products like certified organic foods, sustainably sourced palm oil, and fair trade goods are examples of forest-friendly options.
After learning about the importance of forest-friendly foods, I realize how impactful food choices can be on the environment, especially when it comes to deforestation and habitat destruction. Unsustainable farming practices, like those that contribute to deforestation for crops such as soy, palm oil, and cocoa, can have devastating effects on forests and wildlife.
To make more sustainable food choices, I will commit to:
1. Choosing sustainably sourced products: Looking for certifications like Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, or organic labels that indicate the product was produced with minimal environmental harm.
2. Supporting local and seasonal produce: Buying from local farmers or farmers' markets reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and helps local ecosystems thrive.
3. Reducing meat consumption: The meat industry contributes significantly to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, so cutting back on meat and choosing plant-based options can reduce my environmental impact.
These choices are important to me because they help support the preservation of forests, protect biodiversity, and reduce climate change. By making more conscious decisions about the food I consume, I can contribute to a healthier planet for future generations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?
KAMALESH S 4/09/2025 1:41 AMIf I were to consider where to allocate the money spent on food waste, I’d prioritize areas that align with long-term sustainability and well-being. Instead of throwing away $1,500 worth of food annually, it would be better to invest that money in more nutritious food choices, save it for future needs, or donate it to food banks or community programs that assist those in need. This could provide a better return both financially and socially.
As for food waste patterns, many people tend to throw away items that spoil before they’re consumed, such as fresh produce, dairy products, and leftovers that aren’t used in time. One way to address this is by planning meals better, making use of leftovers, and freezing perishable items that are close to expiring. Additionally, better storage practices, such as using airtight containers or freezing certain foods, could help reduce spoilage. Buying in smaller quantities or opting for longer-lasting options could also minimize waste.
Ultimately, being more mindful of food purchases and consumption can help reduce waste and make better use of the resources we spend on food.
