Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

    Land, Water, and Air
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I didn't realize just how much water goes into everything I own and use. Much of my water footprint comes not just from me turning on the water at home, but from all of the food, products, and other items I use daily.

What is one way you can reduce your impact on nature the next time you spend time outdoors, and how might that action help preserve the environment for others?

One way you can reduce your impact on nature is camping in designated campsites or other durable areas. By doing this, vegetation and wildlife remain preserved and unharmed. This also allows other campers/hikers to appreciate the scenery later on.

I recently moved into a apartment and I did not know what the evacuation/tornado plans were, so I looked through a booklet my leasing office gives all tenants. I gathered some basic information there, and then I contacted my leasing agent with more specific questions. Once I learned about the extreme weather protocol, I made sure to have a spot for essential items by the entry way of my apartment, including a spare charger, a flashlight, and my cat's carrier.

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

The most difficult thing about this challenge was remembering to take my reusable bags with me. I also had to remind myself not to use single-use bags when I didn't plan to need bags. However, I was able to use less bags and use sturdier bags by implementing this challenge in addition to reducing waste!

How did being mindful of vehicle idling change your perspective on fuel consumption and air quality? What other transportation habits can you adopt to reduce your environmental impact?

I didn't realize just how much my car idles. My car has an automatic engine shut-off feature when I idle at traffic stops, so that part was easy. However, I had to keep reminding myself to shut my vehicle off once I reached my destination and to not leave it running for very long before I drove. Considering that so many people are dependent on cars, and vehicle idling happens so frequently, it made me realize the quantity of emissions being released solely from cars and the impact that has on our air quality. One transportation habit that may reduce my impact is reducing the number of trips I make with my vehicle. If I need to run errands, I can try to do so before or after work when I have already commuted into town, rather than making a separate trip.

How did decluttering and donating items make you feel, both emotionally and physically?

I donated some clothing and accessories, and while it was difficult knowing I like these items and might wear them in the future, I also knew it would feel better to have more space in my closet. Most of these items either didn't fit or I hadn't worn in a while, so it was relieving to donate them so somebody else could fully enjoy them.
