Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Another animal native to most of the US and Canada is the skunk! While the striped skunk generally has a bad name, it consumes beetles and mice in gardens. It is black with large, white stripes on its back.

Another common animal to South Central US is the eastern gray squirrel. It is brownish or gray in color with lighter underparts and has a bushy tail. Its medium size averages 1.5 pounds (0.5 kg).

For those of you (like me) who don't truly know what biodiversity is, this is for you.

"‘Biodiversity’ means the variety and abundance of the world’s plants and animals.", according to Fauna & Flora 2024, Fauna & Flora website, accessed 10 April 2024, <https://www.fauna-flora.org/explained/explained-what-does-biodiversity-mean>.

The website cited is a great resource which explains what biodiversity is, how biodiversity loss affects humans, what causes biodiversity loss and how we can stop it. This was a very interesting read and opened my eyes to helping to restore nature.

Texas is located in the South Central United States region. Today I learned there are several kinds of bats native to this region. One species is the Eastern Pipistrels, also known as, the Tricolored bat. They are small bats with yellowish-brown fur and weigh about 7.5 grams.
