Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.

Come join your community for a tree-planting event! Join the City of Guelph, the Rotary Club of Guelph and Trees for Guelph for a special Earth Day tree planting event. Link to register can be found in the "learn more" tab

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Use Guelph Waste App to determine what belongs in each waste stream

I will use the Guelph Waste App to help sort my waste into the correct stream and make sure items like batteries, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste are disposed of properly.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track

Remember to bring a reusable cup or water bottle when you're out.

I will bring a reusable drink cup with me for my beverage orders or water refill stations to reduce the amount of single-use item waste I create.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Meditate

Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 5 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.

Some days, I skip the shower altogether. I don't see an option for that.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What did you learn about your water footprint, and what changes felt most practical or surprising? How does this connect to resilience on a larger scale?

We are well below the national average, but the quiz seemed to be US only, so I selected NY as the state not sure how much that matters.

Hi all, I hope you are having a great weekend. Can anybody tell me how to change the challenges? I will look around the site some more today, but I might need a bit of guidance. And also, go team go :)

      • TEAM CAPTAIN
Hi Deidre, wanted to give a quick update! You can select additional actions (up to the limit of 5 daily and 20 one-time) but if you delete actions to make room for new ones, the tracked benefits will be deleted as well (think # of gallons of water saved, for example). Being able to keep those benefits saved, while exploring new actions is on the Ecochallenge team's radar, but unfortunately hasn't been developed yet. Let me know if this helps or you had further questions! :)

Hope you had a great long weekend! You can select up to 5 daily actions (we've selected 4 of those) and up to 20 one-time actions. I'm not sure if you can adjust them once they've been selected, but I will look into it and get back to you on here. Thanks for the question, Deidre!

Day 2 and counting. Weather is not the best today, but the plants need rain, so I shouldn't complain.
