Michael's actions
Community
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Water
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Personal
Learn About Emergency Preparedness
Being prepared can save lives during extreme weather. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the most common weather risks in my area and the steps I can take to stay safe, such as signing up for local alerts or identifying nearby shelters.
Action Track
Participate in a Habitat Restoration Project
Healthy habitats support resilient wildlife populations. I will join 1 restoration efforts, such as planting native plants, cleaning a natural area, or repairing trails to protect biodiversity.
Personal
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 30 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Water
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Soil and Food
Start a home garden
This action was to help sustain food supplies and have a healthier diet and lifestyle. I worked to cultivate the land and plant herbs and crops that I could use on a daily basis. This will help my vegetable intake without relying on chemically raised crops. I can make sure I am using what I can eat and cutting down on food waste as well.
Personal
Explore Resources for Managing Anxiety
Anxiety can be overwhelming, but resources and strategies can help. I will spend 15 minutes exploring resources that help manage anxiety and stress to support my mental and psychological well being.
Work and Organizations
Map Local Risks and Resources
Preparedness is part of resilience. I will spend 60 minutes with colleagues identifying potential risks (such as weather, supply chain, or staffing issues) and the resources or strategies available to address them.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Reduce Light Pollution
Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Leave the Leaves
Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Personal
Reduce high fat, high cholesterol
High cholesterol and diabetes run in my family. My goal is to choose healthy habits that will lower the chance for chronic diseases in the future.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 15 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.
Personal
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Action Track
Clean Up Local Trash
I cleaned up trash in my neighborhood. The neighborhood is often looking disheveled with trash on the ground from people overfilling trash cans. I chose this to make the nature areas more enjoyable and free of trash.
Water
Create My Own Water Action
Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.
Community
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 3 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
Work and Organizations
Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues
Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWork and OrganizationsHow did working together on an environmental project strengthen relationships in your group? What does this teach you about resilience in organizations?
Michael Roberts 4/14/2026 10:23 AMSeeing each other in a different environment can change your perspectives. Working together for a common goal in a selfless way is an excellent way to bond with those around you. The mood is high and everyone is willing to help out. It is a great feeling. Being a part of an organization that goes out of its way to motivate and encourage helping is really uplifting. Allowing its employees to use company time to volunteer is rare and shows dedication. I wish more places put this much effort in active participation in the environment and community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat community activity did you join, and how did it make you feel connected to others? How do projects like this strengthen your community over time?

I joined a volunteer event at Bernheim. It feels great to help fix something so many people enjoy with like minded individuals. Small strives like this by many people over time are what keeps things enjoyable for years to come. It is the little actions over time that make the biggest differences! :)-

An energy and cost saving method I employed in my home is that I sealed any cracks or windows that were causing a draft. This could save hours of needless heating or cooling. It is simple and cheap to do as well. Just need some caulking and paint really. I also taped off a door and used a thermal blanket over it. These door thermal blankets do wonders to fix any draft issues. There are also under the door solutions. A good storm door on the outside helps as well. -

I do maintenance repair on hiking trails. My goal is to keep the trail clear of trash and large debris. My goal is not to fully clear the trail as to preserve its natural state. It has taught me that trails are meant to be natural and that I don't have to make it artificial. It helps not disturb the wildlife and keep things feeling as they should during a hike. We have a tendency to over-landscape, learning that less is more helped me in trail maintenance.-

Another recommendation! If you are headed towards Paducah, there is a place just north of there called Garden of the Gods. It is a beautiful place. I am going there next month to hike and check out some of the historical areas.-
Barbie Bell 4/13/2026 7:50 PMI grew up in Southern Illinois. Visited the Garden of the Gods many many times. The entire Shawnee National Forest is Beautiful.
