Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Allison Roberts 4/30/2024 10:58 AMI knew quite a bit about bees already but I learned today that they will fly long distances to the flowers they prefer! That's why planting natives is so helpful. I recently bought a red flowering currant, a native shrub for our area and it's also beautiful! I'll be adding it to the new garden bed my partner and I just created in our back yard. This bed will be dedicated to natives to support our pollinators as well as some herbs for our kitchen! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Allison Roberts 4/11/2024 12:42 PMWorking from home is great and I love it! However, sitting and looking at a screen for an extended period of time is not good for my brain or body. Getting out for a walk with my dog and my partner a few times a day not only breaks up my screen time but also revitalizes my energy for the rest of my day. And now that our PNW rain has let up a bit, I've been eating my lunch outside too for an extra dose of nature and grounding. -
Allison Roberts 4/08/2024 4:37 PMHow was everyone's weekend? We got out for a misty raining hike with the pup on Saturday. I think we did about 2.5 miles with some nice elevation. I was enjoying all the native plants that are starting to bloom, saw lots of yellow trout lilly, white trillium and bleeding heart! Not too many birds out but I was able to identify a Pacific Wren by it's song. Happy Eclipse day too!-
ARUNSUNDAR S 4/09/2024 8:43 PMwho are people who love rain and find specific peace and joy in it, particularly enjoy the smell of petrichor. Fancy words beginning with 'p' aside, rain smells great, whatever the time of year. In autumn, it enhances the seasonal smells of leaves and fallen fruits.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Allison Roberts 4/03/2024 3:21 PMI understand why for environmental purposes they are encouraging less meat consumption but this is a tricky topic for me. And I agree, feed lot beef is terrible for the environment and for your health. However, all of the research I've been doing for my health recently has pointed to the fact that we actually need to be consuming more animal protein, ideally 1g per healthy pound of body weight per day. As someone with multiple auto immune conditions I've transitioned over the years from the SAD Diet (Sad American Diet) to raw food vegan, to vegetarian and a few years ago when I started eating meat again. All in support of what my body needs (eating for my biology not ideology) while keeping in mind the environmental impact of my choices. So though I choose to eat meat daily, I choose locally and ethically raised animals and only pasture raised beef and pork. After seeing the list provided, I will certainly favor eggs and chicken over beef and pork. And we always eat lots of in season fruits and veggies in our house, favoring to support our local agriculture and we are fortunate to have an awesome local farmers market thereby cutting down on carbon emissions of shipping. -
Allison Roberts 4/03/2024 9:51 AMGood morning! I finally got set up yesterday with my daily and one time actions and I'm excited to get started. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many actions I'm already taking in my daily life to support my community and environment but I know I have more to learn. This morning my dog Iris and I got out for a one mile walk (not sure how long this took since this is also her 'Snifari' and everything must be inspected), we usually do this twice per day and from now on I'll be taking a bag with me to pick up trash. I've also enjoyed noting which flowers are starting to pop out and using my iNaturalist app to id plants I don't know, especially the natives. We also have so many birds! I'm learning to identify their songs so I usually have my Merlin app running too to help me id what I'm hearing. Thanks for reading!-
